More news. The minimum wage is going up by about 3% in October.

Meanwhile, the bank of england is happy for inflation to run at 5%+ without raising interest rates.

As benefits go up with inflation then the benefits crowd are again making a killing over the average working man.

    Disgrace.

Darn - this was my plan for a cushtie couple of years but this and the plan to include savings in assessing all benefits may have it scuppered. For example I am currently doing 16 hours employed per week - if I also did 14 hours 'ebay trading' for zero profit I would get an extra 700 in working tax credits...

Universal Credit won't come in for a few years - you can join the tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, that have set up mickey mouse hobby businesses with low profits to catapult themselves into maximum LHA, tax credits & council tax discount.

I think a lot of households will be stunned in a few years time - "what do you mean, my business should be at least earning NMW, we've been running it for years and only earning a £1 an hour! What's the point in making a profit...?"

Are you saying people on minimum wage are not your average working man/woman ?

Before you attack me maybe you should learn to read.

it's true the minimum wage needs to go up - and i'd say by more than the rate of inflation. i guess they think the tax band changes might help.

however the conservatives have never been a fan of minimum wages (let's no forget it was only brought in in the first place by labour) so i'd be surprised to see them bolster it too much.

Yes, its true that Labour introduced it but what did they think was going to happen to wages when workers in Poland and other Eastern European countries were allowed free access to our labour market ?

who's wages? can't say it's impacted on mine or those of OH (a welder). he works alongside some eastern europeans and they haven't had adjusted wages accordingly. immigration has boosted the uk economy massively.

I would suggest the impact has been most felt by those at the lower end of the income scale.

lower than what? my OH only earns 9 pounds an hour, not that much higher than minimum wage. if minimum wage is protecting those on just less than that then which scale are you refering to?
