ok I've looked at our reading history and it is as follows

    4/01/07- 73113 my reading

    24/05/07- 73530 bg engineer reading

    02/05/08- 75263 estimate

    19/05/09- 76333 estimate

    18/02/10- 78924 bg engineer reading

    10/06/10- 79490 my reading

    17/03/11- 95997 my reading

We are on a standard tariff according to our statement
All the calculations are our own and I would like to add that although they were estimates before the £300 deficit we were also paying a monthly direct debit on top of that.

From 4/10/07 to 10/06/10 you used 6377 kWh of electricity in 1253 days, an average of 5.089 per day.

Then from 10/06/10 to 17/03/11 you used 16507 kWh in 280 days. an average of 59 kWh per day.

    Something is very wrong.

    Date corrected.

    4/1/7 - 24/5/7 = 413 = 2.95kwh/day - this seems low.
    24/5/7 - 18/2/10 = 5394 = 5.39kwh/day
    18/2/10 - 10/6/10 = 566 = 5.05kwh/day

Based on that average useage the 17/3/11 reading should have been around 81000 not 95997.

Trying reading the meter at xx:yyhrs today and the same time tomorrow and Sunday and see what the daily useage is now.

I know just last night we checked the meter and in one evening it said we had used 28 units!
I think it was so low before hand due to the fact that we both worked full time and were never really in at weekends so were only using things in the evening.
I just do not understand where this huge spike in units has come from and to be honest I'm so worried about this I just don't know what to do about it.

Is it a digital meter or dial meter?

It is very easy to mis-read the dial meter as the numbers are not a 'clockface' i.e. they run clockwise and anti clockwise on alternate dials See:

    http://www.edfenergy.com/products-services/for-your-home/my-account/how-to-read-your-electricity-meter.shtml

It is very easy to be thousands of units out.

nothing has changed since last June, as I said nothing has changed in the 4 1/2 years we haved lived in this house

It is a digital meter so I know that the figures have been read right.

I just recieved an email from BG saying that my online bill is now ready to view and when I log in there is no no at all on there. I have no idea what is going on with them at the moment!

how olds your fridge, I know this sounds strange but sometimes if they go wrong they can rocket consumption. If the meter test comes back as correct I would invest in an energy monitor and play about with switching things on and off. Have you had your internal wirring checked? Normaly though if a meter goes wrong the consumption wouldnt be in a pattern

Did bg send you an energy monitor when you signed up?, if not maybe they will or pick one up from diy shed. They aren't particularly accurate but will certainly help you pinpoint your drain by isolating different appliances. I am on a smart meter tarriff (or was) and in a 3 bed semi I eat through about 30kw a day with games, computers, halogen lights, etc
