Phone contract applications declined
Hi,
Before I start, let me just mention that;
a) I am a home owner
b) I've been paying Orange over £30 p/m for the past 5 years
c) I have several credit cards
d) I have never defaulted on payment of any CCs or other accounts
e) my bank account is in credit
f) I have never had any CCJs or anything
g) I have never been refused credit that I can recall
h) since starting all this, I have successfully applied for 2 credit cards (although I closed one immediately because it didn't fulfill my balance transfer needs in the end)
About a month ago I tried to sing up an O2 contract at the carphone warehouse for the Google Nexus S for £30 p/m.
I passed the CPW credit check, but during the contract sign-up the address of my flat wasn't listed. The flats either side of mine were, but mine was missing. The CPW rep tried picking one of the other flats with the intention of changing the flat number later, but the application then came back declined.
We tried again on Vodafone (same phone), with the same result.
The CPW rep called Equifax who apparently provide the credit reference. They advised that I sign up to their free 30 day trial and get my credit report to find out what the problem was. I did, and could not see any problem on the report.
Last week my wife tried to get a Blackberry Torch on O2 from Phones4U and was declined. Again, they couldn't find our address.
I found a number for Equifax, called them and explained the situation. The lady I spoke to confirmed our address didn't appear to be on their system, so she added it.
A few days later my wife went back to the same Phones4U store and successfully applied for the Blackberry Torch. Brilliant.
I went back to CPW today confident that I could now get the phone I wanted, but was again declined. So I walked round the corner to the Vodafone store and applied directly with the network. This has also been declined with no reason attached.
The rep at the Vodafone shop has contacted the credit department to see if we can overturn the decision, and I'm waiting to find out the response.
Does anyone know why I'm not having any luck? Has anyone else had similar problems?
Cheers!

Are you on the electoral roll?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

As above, are you on the roll? Have you been at the address for more than 6 months?
The more times you apply and get turned down the more black marks you get on your credit file. I'd suggest you stop for a month and try again.0 -
Thanks guys. I have been at my current address for four years and have been on the electoral roll at this address for about as long.0

I agree with Jon - I had been turned down by Orange and CPW because of bad credit, even though I had only recently turned 18. I kept trying online, thinking that I might be able to skip the checks.
I later found out that someone had been using my name and address to obtain credit cards and even a morgage (!) with a cleverly altered date of birth which had left me with a bad credit score.
I wrote a note od disassociation on my credit report but still got declined because I had tried myself so many times to get this Phone Contract.
Leave it for a bit, just in case this is the reason.0 -
Hmmm, OK, thanks all. Sounds like I need to sit back and glare with resentment at my old and infirm mobile phone for a while longer.0

Thanks for your input today. After referring my application to Vodafone credit department, they approved it after all, and I now have my shiney new Nexus S!0

Could your wife get a 2nd contract in her name in case your record is in some way blemished?
Refer to the post made last night (above yours)I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0
