i would be careful about spliting the cost per adult if the couple who have 2 kids are having 2 rooms . also think about who is having the nicer bedroom or bigger bedroom etc

I would have the kids pay half as much as an adult for food and drink as soft drinks and snack cost too ...........

That was my point above...the couples with no kids might be a little put out if they get the smaller/rubbish room but are paying more than/the same as the family who ends up taking 2 bedrooms

I have kids and would normally expect to pay for them in the above type of setup so I dont think the families would mind paying a little more especialy if they were having 2 bedrooms as opposed to one.

Total cost divided by number of bed spaces (double bed = 2) gives a unit price = mum, dad + 2 kids pay 4 bed spaces, couple with no kids pay cost of 2 bed spaces. Day visitors contribute something towards food, heat, light.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • I would split the cost between the adults who are staying only. Ask those with kids to provide some wine or drink, and those that are coming for the day to buy a takeaway one night!

This is what we do when we go away with friends.

In the same situation, we didn't charge the people who came to visit for the day, but they did make a meal for everyone.
  • My family (me, boyfriend, parents, sisters, brothers in law and nephews) go to Cornwall every year and stay in a holiday cottage, and split the cost into four between each couple. My sister also does a big Tesco shop to be delivered on the day we get there and again that's split four ways.

I like the bed space idea though, with day visitors cooking a meal.

A lot depends on how good friends everyone is and how relaxed they are about money and the arrangement of the rooms in the house.

In the last cottage we rented there was a lovely master bedroom with an en-suite whereas the family room was quite squashed with a double bed and bunk beds and no en-suite. Would the family be happy paying twice as much for this room?
  • Thanks for all replies - it's made for interesting reading and really helped to confirm our way forward.

We are splitting the cost of accommodation between the adults equally irrespective of parental status. The visitors coming for the days will not pay for any accommodation costs. The best rooms will go to those who need them most. Those of us that don't have needs are happy to take on the less salubrious rooms :D

The food/drink situation had already been agreed in advance to fit our circumstances.

Best idea and also depends how well you know all the other people . When we go for a meal with family or friends we just split between couples regardless if theres kids and whose kids they are it will all balance out evenly as long as no one takes the biscuit (can my kids stay in your room tonight etc

I wouldn't charge the children unless they are well paid child models, in which case they should be chipping in their share.
