How to split holiday cottage costs - suggestions please!

I'd like some advice as to how to split the cost of a holiday cottage. I want to do this fairly and would appreciate suggestions.

The full cost of the cottage is £800.

The holiday cottage is being used by
1. Two couples (no children)
2. One couple with one child (aged 6)
3. One couple with two children (aged 6 and 8)
4. Two single people
5. One couple who will be there during the day only

I don't really know how to fairly split the cost. I was thinking just split the cost amongst the number of adults. However, should those with children pay a bit more and if so how much?

Also, would you ask the couple who will be there during the day only (not sleeping at the property) to make a contribution or not?

I haven't spoken to any of the party yet as I wanted to see what ideas you lovely people could come up with so that negotiations are simple and that we're still talking to each other at the time of the holiday :rotfl::D

I would go for £100 for each adult and the ones who just come for the day - are they having two meals at the house? - contribute to the food budget.

could divvi up the cost by the number of bedrooms needed?

that seems a good price for a cottage that sleeps 13 people...what area/time of year?

It's a decent price for 4 days in UK winter outside school holidays.

Thanks for the suggestion - it appears that splitting the cost amongst adults only is the way to go so far!

Not sure the relevance of the question, but the answer is three...

... I'm intrigued as to your thinking!

Look forward to hearing from you :D

Im intrigued as to your asking the question asking the question about the reply to the answer. As im here i was responding to the post made by 1jim saying that £800 for 13 people was a good price without knowing how long the £800 hire of the cottage was for. because £800 for a night is Sh1te where as £800 for the rest of all the 13 peoples lives wasnt such a bad deal. Hope this satisfies intriguededness and the relevance for asking in the first place. Look forward to hearing from you :D too.

  • I'm sorry that I appear to have caused offence, that was not my intention. My original question was a simple one about splitting costs of a holiday cottage and I wasn't expecting questions about the holiday itself.

My friend regularly stays at Centerparcs in a villa with her family, a mixed group of adults and children. They always divide the cost per bedroom, which seems fair to me.

The accommodation costs are fixed, so divvy that up by bedrooms or per adult, or per heads in bed...

Then once that's out of the way, have a kitty that supplies the food / entertainment / alcohol budget.

( Now here's why it's sensible to make it per room on the accomm but per adult on the everything else budget - single adults will probably drink more than the ones with kids, thereby cancelling out the extra food costs of the kids)

Hope you all have a lovely time!

we're going on hols with other folks this year, we have separate accommodation so we're each paying for our own, but though we haven't spoken about it yet we will organise a kitty for whoever is going shopping to dip into.;)
