Water Charges

I have in my possession a draft copy of the brochure that will be delivered to all next year. Someone owning a property valued at £300K will pay charges of £637 per annum once the charge is fully phased in. I have heard there is a site where 60,000 households have declared that they will not pay (civil disobedience) Anyone know anything about this?

There's the 'We won't pay' campaign organised by the Socialist Party. Some of the trade unions are making noises too. The Socialist party has been getting a list of non-payers ready for a while now. They have had meetings in my area.

I hope there's mass non-payment here. I don't personally object to paying for water services (although I know it's already included in our rates) but I am completely absolutely utterly opposed to privatisation which is where this is headed.
I'm not paying. It scares the pants off me - I may end up in court - but sometimes you have to stand up and be counted.
I'll put the soapbox away now!

Nobody likes to pay but I do not mind paying a fair amount. The problem is that this botched up mess has nothing to do with fairness, just simple revenue generation. There is no doubt that we were paying less than our fair share of local taxation for the services that we were demanding and that we therefore needed to a see a rise .. but the fair way to do this would be on consumption, not a flat rate.

Why should someone living by themselves in a nice house have to pay more than a large family living in a small house? Why is every party in this province standing up yakknig on about the poor ... all this means is that, as usual approximately one third of us will have to pick up the bill for the entire province.

I am willing to pay my fair share but have serious problems with paying for those that can't be bothered .. anybody who can afford alchohol can afford water.

  • I'm a single guy, just bought a house, and am just about getting by. Luckily, my parents live close by, and I can go there for my evening meals etc until I get up and going.

Anyway, I take one shower once a day, and flush the toilet maybe 2 or 3 times a day, as I'm out at work most of the time. Thats all the water that is used, bar the odd glass or two to drink. My house is ~£200k, so I find it hard to take that i'll have to pay so much for using so little water.

Will people have the option to put in a water meter, and if so, will it cost much to install?
if i had known then what i know now

Yup...there are thieves...burglars and then theres the government..........who will bleed you dry and give you nothing but contempt in return, whilst Blair et al pretend they are the worlds bobby on the beat....we pay for it...

    This country has a population of 58 million...........Germany...80 plus...yet we spend 50% more on defence....yes 50%!!!

France has the same pop. and we spend 100% more than they do.........double!!!

And for what ...........so Tony and co can play the big fella.......its obscene, its absurd...its an affront to all tax payers.

Put me on the list boys...........this is gunna be a showdown........!

PS The government gave an absolute undertaking, back in 1997, that the reform of rates then would mean we would never have to pay water rates in NI...end of.........now we are being shafted............they can all go to hell!
