Till discrepency - loose my job?

I started my job at Netto in February and have had no experience in retail or money handling before. I've been doing fine for weeks, then last week my till was £54 pounds down. I had been giving £50 cashback all day long and it had been one of the busiest days and a lot of money was handled.
I am on my 3 month probation period so my by the Netto handbook I should have a more lenient diciplinery. I phoned my boss to ask him if he had found any till receipts to confirm a mistake and he said he had not looked yet but when I come in on Monday Danielle my other colleague would tell me what was happening. I came in on Monday and received no briefing on what had happened - but was told to help on the shop floor instead of tills - I assumed this was because my other colleague who spends most time on my shop floor was on holiday.
I came in the next day, and I was early so my boss had not arrived yet, I asked my colleague what I would be doing today and he told me I would be on the tills. I thought I had been let off the hook, so started checking my float and change. Then my boss came in and stopped me and told me I could not go on the till because I has been banned till an investigation has been completed. So I went on to the shop floor and carried on with my work completely confused.
Halfway through the day my boss called me in to his office and told me that he had phoned HR and they said that because I'm on my probation period they would not have to document anything but told my boss to call his superior and ask him to sort it out.
My boss then told me that I would be receiving a letter to tell me that I have to come in on my day off at 3pm for an investigation/meeting with his boss. I have received this letter and most worryingly it says "It appears that we may not be in a position to continue your employment with the company. You are therefore advised that this meeting may result in the termination of your employment"
I would just like some advice, would you agree that this is fair? I have zero experience in this field, and I'm very new to the job.

That sounds like the sort of phrase that they have to put in so you are aware - words like 'may' are often overlooked.
Have you also been told you can have another staff member or Union rep with you? Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
I know this won't be any help for you, but a difference of £54 looks like a mistake between £60 and £6 if you see what I mean. Are they sure that they balanced the till correctly and that there actually is a diff ?
Anyway good luck for your investigation, I do hope they keep you on.

It's also fair to remind you that as you're under 12 months with the company your employment rights are limited at best, they can if they want just get rid of you.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

I wouldn't accept blame just like that, where is the proof? who else used the till? all and sundry use those tills, supervisors come along and take money as the till fills up, who is to say where or when the money went missing, (if it is missing) if there is no proof.0

Both me, my manager and another colleague checked my amount. All came up ££54 down. A customer came in during the day and said I had given him £5 instead of £9 chance, it was so busy so I just handed him the £4 because he had his receipt. So I think that's where the £4 down comes from.Ihatecameron wrote: »I wouldn't accept blame just like that, where is the proof? who else used the till? all and sundry use those tills, supervisors come along and take money as the till fills up, who is to say where or when the money went missing, (if it is missing) if there is no proof.
We all have individual tills, my float is checked by me in the morning and we all have individual boxes that we put our excess money in. The only thing I noticed is that when I came back to my till after my break my keys had been taken out.Wins so far 2011: L'Occitane Rose 4 Reins = £130 -
I used to work at ALDI, I was always stuck on the til because I was the new guy and everybody else hated going on the til. I left after three months, I hated the job. They would give you ten minutes to do a job that would take two people fifteen minutes
Our tils did`nt work out how much change the customer was due so we had to do it in our heads, the last thing you need when it`s a busy wkend. My til was always down a pound or two
I feel for you working on the til in a place like that, it can be really stressful and its so easy to make a mistake because ure trying to do a number of things at once
We had a group of ppl come in once and do a distraction then somebody walked out with a TV. A guy came over to my til and said his wife had lost her purse, had it been handed in. Whilst I was talking to him two other people walked out with the TV as my back was turned, their quite sly. They later came back and I identified them, they were known to the police already. You need eyes in the back of ure head in retail0 -

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good, I think you are supposed to lock the till and take the keys with you.0 -
When you kept giving out £50 cashbacks did you check the till reciept to ensure the customer accepted the cashback? Just asking because when a customer asks for cashback and they have to press a button to accept the cashback, if they instead press no/decline it will cancel the cashback off the reciept and unless you look you will have given £50 out for nothing.
Edit just to add anything over £50 is classed as a major cash discrepancy and is gross misconduct, they also work on acumulative discrepancies over a peroid of time which total.£50 so I would be amazed if you keep your job.0 -
Lost my job because I was loosing them too much money, apparantly I would loose them too much if I worked for them for much longer.
I said "there's no jobs about any more" and he just laughed and said "I know"Wins so far 2011: L'Occitane Rose 4 Reins = £130 -
