This is where Gideon Osborne went wrong.

He should have said fuel was to increase by 50P and saved us 51p. Then, the more miles I drive, the more I save. After 10,000 miles I'd have saved enough to buy a Japanese TV.

The man is a clueless toff - in good company I suppose.

There's no wonder Kenneth Clarke fell asleep. That said, if I slept at work I'd be sacked.

    politicians all do this.

for instance, when the coalition took over, and the govt's annual borrowing came in at something like £140bn instead of £147bn as projected, Ed Balls was ranting on and on about how the govt should be spending the £7bn windfall they had received on building new houses. windfall? my @rse.
Arrh, but Ed Balls is an economist (apparently) they count 'costs' differently to the average person.

Pursuing this, each time there is a revision (as there always is) in figures like borrowing, growth etc it is then implied we have suddenly just become 'better' or 'worse' off rather than nothing changing except the figures.

    Let's put this another way.

You have payments to make each month, and you have to pay them.

Lets say these payments are £50 a month. In April, the planned increase is £5...making the new payments £55 a month.

There is no way out of this increase for you. You have to pay it.

If, in March, the £5 increase is scrapped, how much have you saved over the next year?

Well judging by the news this morning this one is going to keep biting George Osbourne on the !!!!. It's being reported (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12850205) that prices went up in advance of the fuel duty announcement and down by the same amount after the budget.

Saving to the motorist - nothing.

    Yer, same happened here.

Was 1.39 for diesel in the station a mile from where I work in the morning. 1.40 on the way home. Next morning, 1.39.

However, thats nothing to do with the government. Thats the retailiers putting prices up a penny, then bringing them down a penny within a 24 hour period.

Duty dropped 1p whichever way you care to look at it.

Duty isn't charged at the point of sale as is the case with VAT. So the 6 o'clock switch over was nonsense. As the fuel already in the forecourt tanks or in transit on Wednesday was duty paid at the higher rate.

It is something to do with the Government. George Osbourne had a King Canute moment and really believed that he could prevent private companies raising prices as they wished.

    He's either:

    a) really stupid and didn't know about how markets work and now has to waste time acting tough with the oil companies instead of dealing with the bigger picture issues

    b) he's really clever because he's raised extra tax from petrol sales and has someone else to blame

    So...

    1. The Treasury makes a penny less for every litre of fuel sold.

    2. Oil companies make more money...

    3. ... except OUR oil companies who are funding the cut in duty.

Brilliant Gideon! Well done, mummy will be pleased.

Whatever he did in this budget, opposers of his would have found some way of stating pretty much what you did above.

There is, and never will be, an approach which suits everyone.

Crass stupidity, anyway, to cut petrol prices. People should be discouraged from driving, given the polluting effects of cars and the potential of oil to run out in the not to distant future (to name just two negatives). I'm sure at least 50 per cent or more of vehicles in this country are not essential.

There are far better ways to 'help' society.
