My Tescos car insurance renewal arrived today - jumped from £204 last year to £282. OK, my insurance is small by some standards (small car, no accidents, car and me getting on a bit) but that's a considerable jump. That's, like, 40%

So I read this thread and got an on-line quote from Direct Line - £169 for exactly the same cover* or £196 with Legal Protection added - both cheaper than last year!

    * OK there's an offer there for two months cover free if I pay up front but I intend to do that anyway. And the Fire and Theft excess is £350 for First Direct as opposed to £100 for Tesco.

    Guess what I'll be doing?

I wonder if Legal Protection cover is really useful to have - I've never bothered with it before.

P.S. I have no connection whatever with either Tesco or Direct Line (apart from car insurance, that is).

Don't forget to look at the Cash Back sites as you may even save a bit more.

quidco, topcashback are 2 i know of, there may be more

OP just use comparison websites to get a quote, 1 ins co for 1 person could very well give a different price to another person, the price is dependant on various factors

I am experiencing similar issues. I have been driving almost 15yrs, I am 33 and married and have had 2x non fault incidents which I was paid out on. My insurance coming up between £1000-2000 and I have driven a fleet car for 4yrs so can't keep my NCD from before then! I am really pulling my hair out searching. Feel better that it's not just me, but I feel like I am being quoted as a young/new driver or even as an ex drink driver at these prices. I use my car for work too :(

You should try Endsleigh - they used to allow a very good introductory discount if you can prove fault free claims on fleet insurance

  • As a last point , do you have any older relatives you could add to your policy ? A female would be ideal , your Mum maybe? (as long as they have a clean licence). They dont even need to drive your car all that often , just have them as a NAMED driver to see how it affects your quotes . Try the same with your father if he holds a licence.

This is good advice and usually works well. The Insurance Company don't know that the named relatives don't drive but seem quite willing to give discount where they consider some of the "risk" is taken away from yourself!
  • Managed to find one under £600 with Tesco...oddly enough if I add my partner it's £1 cheaper!

I'm going to try a few quotes with my mom on and see if that makes any difference - anyone know if it matters if they don't live at the same address as you? (hopefully it'll say in the t&cs)

Thanks for all the helpful replies so far though :)
