Using my Blackberry in Canada
I'm visiting some family in Toronto in early June and want to known the best way of using my phone abroad. I use my blackberry for everything, twitter, Facebook, email, rss feeds from fav web sites as well as for keeping in touch with friends and family.
Am I best buying a World Sim card or waiting and buying a local sim when I get there? My provider 3 charge £10 per mb of data, so that option is not on the cards.

you will need to unlock the Blackberry before you go , code off ebay from a buyer with loads of good feedback, otherwise it will not work with the local simEx forum ambassador

really good point about the unlocking code!!! I had almost forgot about that one.
I see :money:Martin has a thread on mobile phones abroad, but nothing regarding data usage, which with smartphones, is huge these days0 -

Nothing?Using mobile internet costs a fortune
Data roaming (using the web overseas) can cost large, so switch it off before you go. If you have to access the web, use free wi-fi hotspots and if checking emails don't download attachments.
The most dangerous move is to watch or download TV & films while abroad. Do this, and it can cost £100s.
more on slashing data roaming costs
Using the internet on your mobile overseas can cost massively, around £8 per megabyte which could easily be used in one session. Though within the EU you won't be charged more than £49 in one month.
The Simple answer is to switch off data while abroad. But if you really can't help not using it, here are a few tips:- Use free wi-fi. Sites like My Hotspots, Free Hotspot, and Hotspot Locations will tell you where to locate free wi-fi hot spots. Use these if you need to connect.
- Watch out for emails. Checking emails shouldn't use up much data but beware downloading attachments. This will cost you big.
- Check add-on bundles. As for traditional roaming, there are hidden add-on data bundles offered by most providers. These are still pricey but will take the edge off steep costs.
