iphone 4 data usage

Hi all, apologies if this has been covered on another thread, but i did have a good look and couldnt see anything.
Got my new iphone 4 yesterday (first iphone i have had), and am itching to go on an app spree, but just wanted to understand about what i can do without blowing my 500Gb data usage and ending up spending far more than i realised.
If i wanted to listen to the radio for free, how would i do this? it looks like you can download apps, but whenever i google it, people suggest that this would take my data usage....considering my old nokia brick used to give my FM radio free of any charges or allowance limits, i find it hard to believe there isnt a method through the iphone that wouldnt count towards my data usage?
likewise, are there any of the music streaming sites (spotify, lastfm) etc that would not count towards my data usage? (i assume not, but worth asking!)

If it was Android you use a free FM radio app = no data charge presume Apple have similar in the market .
Streaming = data .

Where you can, stick to wifi.
Everything will count towards the data usage, even when you're not using the phone. You might think it's sitting there doing nothing, but in reality it's firing off data packets all over the shop :rotfl:0 -
Thanks for that
I guess it's not the technology thats the issue, its that apple realised how much money can be made by monetizing something that people have taken for granted as being free!0 -

Your 500gb wont last long for streaming and listening to internet radio, tune-in radio is a good app, but as others suggest use wi-fi where possible

Apple dont charge for data neither do any of the other makers .
Its needs an exam qualification before you buy a Smartphone .

I can't see how you would ever use 500gb of data!
I think you meant 500mb.....?
I have 750mb a month to use, I listen to internet radio to and from work every day so about 20 hours a month as well as Facebook and Sports apps for checking scores etc. Never get near my usage allowance so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.
Having said that, I only ever download apps at home on my WiFi as its faster and uses none of my data allowance.0 -
What Timberflake said, i get no where near my allowance of 750, and well under 500, and im on it most of the day checking various things:beer:0

500mb. You need to use wifi wherever possible and download an app to keep an eye on your data, especially if your network has heavy penalties for going over.If i wanted to listen to the radio for free, how would i do this? it looks like you can download apps, but whenever i google it, people suggest that this would take my data usage....considering my old nokia brick used to give my FM radio free of any charges or allowance limits, i find it hard to believe there isnt a method through the iphone that wouldnt count towards my data usage?
Presumably the iPhone has an FM tuner?likewise, are there any of the music streaming sites (spotify, lastfm) etc that would not count towards my data usage? (i assume not, but worth asking!)
No. And bear in mind that a web page can be 2 megabytes,a few minutes of Youtube 20mb, and a minute of last Fm 800k to 2mb, so your allowance wont last long without wifi if youre going to be using it a lot.0 -
Iphone does not have an fm tuner.Everything is done on apps which use data0
