Upstairs or Downstairs

  • If upstairs you may have a private loft space which can offer a lot of useful extra storage space.

How warm it is depends on how well the loft is insulated. If it's uninsulated then a ground floor flat may be warmer.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • I live on a first floor flat with a dog.....and I'd say down stairs all the way. I'd give anything for a ground floor flat as it makes life so much easier!
  • If top quality or purpose built then you should not hear people upstairs.

LOL!!! I can hear the people above me walking around and my block was purpose built 10 years ago. It's because they have laminate with rubbish underlay.

OP, with the dog and garden space I would say the ground floor flat might be better suited to you. But what might be a good idea is to get a friend to view the upper flat while you are below, just to check the noise transmission.

we're downstairs in a cottage flat, the benefit of a front and back door is not to be discounted!
the prevoius owner also installed windows which only open at the top 5 inches, so security is OK from that perspective.
our upstairs negihbour is very quiet, so can't comment on noise levels for normal people..

Upstairs. And make sure there is nobody above you if it's a block with more than two storeys. However, check that dogs are allowed.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

Do you want to know a secret?

The reason the upstairs flat is cheaper is because all upstairs locations without an elevator have a more limited rental base.

In other words, older people, disabled people, anyone with a mobility issue is NOT a candidate for upstairs rentals. With less of a rental pool to draw upon, the owner has to demand less in rent if they want to get it occupied quickly.

So if you're young, healthy, with full mobility, and both apartments are otherwise equal... take advantage of it! Grab the cheaper rental and get some extra exersize in the process, everyone wins. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Ground it is. The upstairs is £325 which is £40 cheaper however, they want £325 deposit, £325 first month and then £325 upfront! Also, it is fully furnished and most people I know, have their own furniture so it's now not an option! Plus I can negotiate on the ground flats deposit which to be honest is a benefit at present. I just think having two little dogs, it is better suited to be downstairs. I have had to sell my house due to noisy neighbours next door in my house so I am sure that I can handle hearing a few footsteps from upstairs, if only for 6 months. Fingers crossed I get it now ha!
