I'd be telling them to piddle off and that they were too stupid to own a dog to be honest (GREAT Dane... the clue about the size is kinda in the name). They didn't have an issue with the size of the pup - it was the shock of the amount of work required and the kiddie excuse was the convenient get out clause.

No way should she be left out of pocket - if she does refund, I'd make them wait till it's rehomed again, and deduct the expenses incurred because why should she lose out because a bunch of numpties wanted to treat a living being like a disposable toy?!

Why anyone would buy off a breeder when there are so many dogs being PTS in rescues shelters every day.....I'm sure the breeder means well (or is making a profit) but whats the betting that at least one of the pups will end up at a shelter for outgrowing it's home.
What is going to happen to the puppies she is breeding if she can't find homes for them..?

Don't shout at me - you would feel the same if you had seen bad things like I have.

Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!

    This...
I'd query whether your friend should be breeding. With a breed of that size checks on the family need to be even tougher than most. She should also comply with the contract she has. If she doesn't have a contract she clearly hasn't thought it out. These are living animals she's selling not cakes.
And This. Both more eloquently put than I could.

I have a different spin on things I'm afraid...
1 - Pup was 10 wks when sold, so was 11 wks when returned.... a lots of breeders won't let pups go until 12 wks, so there should be no problem with resale
2 - At least the original buyers had the good sense to return said pup fairly promptly, and hopefully before too much damage could be done
3 - Yes it was irresponsible of the original buyers, but they should have been made to jump through LOTS of hoops before being allowed the pup - I'm not a breeder, but I am a vet nurse, and I would think twice and thrice before allowing a giant breed pup to go to a home with 4 kids - was a homecheck carried out?
4 - The pup will probably get sold on again within a couple of weeks for the same price - deduct a couple of weeks worth of food and board, and refund the rest is what I would deem fair
5 - Breeders in general annoy me - irrelavent I know, and likely to lower the value of my opinion, but I can not understand how breeding can be justified when there are so many unwanted animals in kennels!
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Although I appreciate the sentiments re unwanted animals in kennels I do not see why breeders are necessarily beaten.
Yes a lot of them who show do it for the prestige and more than who would care to admit do it for the money, but there are some very good breeders out there who do care about their breed.
Equally there are many irresponsible dog owners who will either allow their animals to breed, without having a clue about what they are doing or becausethey think it would be 'nice' or because they do not take appropriate steps to prevent pregnancy.
At the end of the day it is down to personal choice and preference. If you want a particular breed (for whatever reason and can afford it) why not?
It is not about whether your dog is a pedigree or a local rescue it is about whether you have fully done your homework and are prepared to be a 'good' owner.
At the end of the day however you may come by a dog we all know that whether you have paid a large amount/or nominal amount it doesn't mean you are better or worse than the next person.

I'd be tempted for a partial refund, but as other before have said, was there a contract? I will never understand why people get any pets without thinking about it properly? it's not the same as just returning a chair or table.
I can't believe they said a great dane was too big, what size did they think they were!

    Well said! :T:T:T:T:T:T

Personally, I am sick and tired of people on here jumping on those who chose to buy from reputable, responsible breeders.

And, invariably they see/hear of a dog needing a home and all go "Oh! hes so lovely - I would take him BUT .... my house is too small/I already have a dog/my OH would go mad or is allergic", blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, - and then feel vindicated that they are such good people because they made an empty gesture.

I have 11 dogs - all pedigree and all bought from responsible, reputable breeders - my choice. I don't want a rescue at this moment in my life.

I am, however, active in my own breed's rescue - raising funds, doing assessments and home checks, transporting dogs, and so on - I just don't want one! So shoot me!

To the OP - all my pups have come with contracts stating that, if they were to be returned to the breeder, the only monies to be refunded would be the re-sale price minus the breeders costs. I understand that this is standard practise and (I believe) the fairest way of doing things.

It appears that mistakes have been made by both parties but, thankfully, the pup is now safely home.

Instead of slating the breeder of the pup, shouldn't we be concerned about the fact that these people are free to breed four children and yet are incapable of looking after a 10 week old puppy :eek::eek:

Absolutely ditto what this OP says.
If it were'nt for the responsible breeders then a lot of breeds would die out. I'm not talking about back yard breeders or puppy farms, but legitimate people with a concern for their chosen breed,
As far as a Great Dane puppy being 'too big' :rotfl::rotfl:.
Its a giant breed they grow like weeds, if not more so. Any breeder worth their salt checks out their potential buyers, asks questions, home-checks, and makes totally sure that the puppy is going where its been researched, is wanted and will have a proper life.
I am mum to a rescued great dane, and involved in the rescue also, and these dogs are a joy to own, but they do come with their potential problems and health issues, namely bloat, wobblers syndrome and heart problems, they are not known for their longevity either. Insurance is not cheap, so obviously its imperative that any opotential inexperienced owner knows exactly what they are in for. If its done correctly, a life time of love with a breed that is a joy to own.

I cant believe they didnt know how big a Great Dane would be. They must have seen one to want to own one and I assume they saw your friends dogs? There is more to this than they are saying.
