cancelled flights

at the start of october last year i booked a one way flight from birmingham to punta cana, dominican republic with thomson fly online, so i could join a trans atlantic cruise back. At the end of February i recieved a letter from thomson to say they were cancelling my flight unless i paid a further £500, they said this was because legally they are not allowed to sell one way tickets to dominican republic.

i need to know where i stand on this?
Can they do this?
Why did it take 5 months to tell me?

I can recieve a full refund, but now the cruise is only 5 weeks away, and the flights are over double the cost that i originally paid.

thomson are fully aware of the fact that i have a cruise booked, to bring me back home. but they still insisted on charging me £500 more.
