PC running really-REALY slow

Help, my computer is running really, REALLY slow. So slow in fact I can only type one character of a word every 1 – 6 seconds, it’s taken an age to type this SOS. All programs that require mouse of keyboard use are affected including the internet.
I have a DELL Optiplex-740 with 1-TB HDD running XP with SP3 plus 3Gig of RAM. I believe the HDD is about 90% empty.
The HDD seems to be continually running in the background which I’m sure is a clue. The problem seemed to start about a week ago and is getting worse.
Is there a way to turn background processes off until I get to a point where normal operation is resumed or some other way to find what may be causing it?. I have PCTools AV and Registry Manager both of which shows a virus and problem free system and yesterday I downloaded and run Malawarebytes but all with no improvement. ** Help a drowning man !! **

Right click on the bar at the bottom fo the desktop select "taskmanager" click on the processes tab and on click on the top of the column labelled "CPU" and see if there is anything using a lot of your cpuThere's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
Please open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of the last log
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin):idea:0 -
Hi
Thanks for the reply.
At the bottom of the Task Manager window it show "46 Processes" and CPU usage varying between 0% and 1% with an occasional increase to 3%.
Thanks0 -
Hi AliEnRIK
After running Malawarebytes I uninstalled it as I didn't want to take the chance of it slowing things down even more. I'm perfectly happy to re-install it though - shall I? - and run the tests you suggest?
Thanks

try it without pc tools and registry manager
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
If it's slow in safe mode, run chkdsk c: /F
on the c: drive!!

Hi AliEnRIK
I've done what you suggested and the Malawarebytes log is only 1 page but I think the Hijackthis file my be a bit big to paste here, it's 5 pages of A4. I don't think I can .zip it to here, can I?
Any suggestions>
and in reply to "CLOSED" - I did try with PCTools and Reg' Manager off but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Post the hijack log in sections
Aa for closeds advice, id recommend UNINSTALLING pctools and reg manager
pc tools as its not very good, and manager as you could very well break your operating system whilst using it
And some programs, even when disabled, can effect the operating system (ive had a similar experience with an old version of comodo):idea:0 -
ok aliEnRIK, here goes. First is Malawarebytes then Hijackthis ...
