That narrows it down to 1993 - 2011 model golf.

Code readers can be bought from £15 upwards, But without knowing the exact model/year of your
car i cannot say what reader you need.

What light is on? I can probably give you a good indidcator (free diagnostics with disclaimer having not seen the car!). My guess would be brake light switch or temp sender without even knowing which light though...and they are about £15-20, so you could get that fixed at VW with a pukka diagnosis for about £75.

Help please, I am trying to find a cheap or even 'free' diagnostic check for my car as engine light flashed up.

I'm on an extremely tight budget, so bit worried about what might be wrong with it. Though have a feeling it is the catalytic converter!

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

    Durrr...really?! :rotfl:

There are many 'engine' lights. I didn't want to presume which one the OP was seeing, so asked for clarity. There is one that looks like an engine, but also 7/8 more that all could light up too.

    What's an engine light?

All lights serve specific purposes. Have you no manual?
An engine symbol to me, would, without a manual, indicate low oil.

I don't know about Golfs but "engine light" suggests something to do with the fuel injection e.g. defective or dirty air flow sensor .. just guessing.

I think most people would interpret "Engine light" to mean this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malfunction_indicator_lamp

    Or maybe that's just me...

That's still too subjective, and if you're offering advice on what parts to buy, or what may be wrong with the vehicle, you need specifics.
