Car Diagnostic Check

Help please, I am trying to find a cheap or even 'free' diagnostic check for my car as engine light flashed up.

I'm on an extremely tight budget, so bit worried about what might be wrong with it. Though have a feeling it is the catalytic converter!

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Fairly useless post without telling us the make/model... ;)

Make, model and engine size would be handy as I'm fresh out of ESP at the moment.

A friend of mine nearly paid £90 to Vauxhall to do a diagnostic check on his Zafira a few weeks back, luckily my old man has a £50 device and did it for free...

My local garage charges £40+vat .... you will only get it "free" if the garage is going to get paid for fixing whatever the problem is.

VW charge £59 and that can be all you pay if it's fixed within the alloted hour or so (plus parts if needed!).

Don't expect them to get it right though  they only stock fan belts and batteries, so you might end up getting sold those!!

You could buy a diagnostic kit from Argos (mail order so you can use distance selling regs), use it and then take it back.

If i shorted two particular pins of the OBD port on my almera, the service light used to flash the ecu codes.
