Three Mobile + Roaming + Voicemail = CONFUSED

I am in need for an urgent advice please as I am travelling tomorrow. Earlier I checked that roaming was enabled on my Three mobile and when I was asking about the charges abroad, I was reassured that receving a voice mail is not chargeable unless I actually retrieve the message.
Today I was looking at their website and found the following:
" There are two call charges when you get a voicemail – one for receiving the call to your mobile abroad and another for sending it back to your voicemail in the UK if you don’t answer or haven’t got a signal
· You can call us to set up an ‘all calls divert’ or turn off your voicemail if you’re concerned about voicemail charges"

So I contacted them again today to switch my voicemail off when I was once again emphatically reassured that I will not be charged at all just by someone leaving a voicemal on my mobile unless I actually retrieve it abroad. The woman also checked with someone else when I told her about what's on the website but came back to say that I will not be charged. I decided to leave the voicemail switched on and possibly try Three's theory (as I am only on a short trip) unless someone here has tried this and was definitely charged just by someone leaving them a voice mail. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

  • Ive travelled a fair bit with 3 phone and do not bother picking up voice mail messages. I was in Slovenia last and got 6. When I landed I just dialled up and retrieved them all. I didnt see any charges for this.

I believe the only charge you would pay is when you call up the UK to get your voice mail... and then it's charged at the rate of making a call to England while abroad. I never bother doing that though as I always forget my PIN to retrieve messages from abroad and also it means less work to do ;)

Thans Mathew. Does this them make 3 a bit better to use when roaming abroad than other networks? May be....... Cheers.

It may be that if you set all calls to go to voicemail or if the phone is off it will be free, whereas if the phone rings and you don't answer, then it diverts back. Or they may have changed practice since the info was written and forgotten to update it. I don't know this, but it could be worth checking again if that could be where the confusion arises ...
  • Ive been on Orange and Three over the past few years and only ever had charges if I dialled the answer service with me making a call back to the uk +44........ I dont ever dial the answer service any more when over seas though.

I'd email them (get it in black & white so to say) - even if their reply comes while you are away, better to have it when you get back. Took me a while to work out what easy mobile were charging me for calls to an 08 call from abroad - I know they charge 2 ways when people leave VM.
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!
