Hello,
The 192.168.1.1 number isn't the same for all routers - you'll probably find the router you switched over to uses a different number (IP address). It's usually printed on the bottom of them.
I'm also having big problems with AOL at the moment dropping the connection. Someone else I know where I live (also with AOL) is having the same problem as well. I work in IT and have done as much testing as I can, but as far as I can tell it's something at their end.
I'm using a Netgear DG834G router. The power, internet and wireless lights on the front are green all the time, and in the Basic Settings screen of the router page (192.168.0.1 for me) you can see it has Downstream of 15842 and Upstream of 965.
However in the section at the top with the IP address it keeps getting an IP (and the DNS server addresses) but then a few minutes later it drops and re-connects repeatedly. When it is connected, if I ping the DNS server IP address it loses at least 50% of the packets. At the moment I've got the ADSL filter plugged into the 'test' socket behind the BT faceplate and it's still the same.
I've been having problems since Sunday, although Tuesday night and last night it worked fine.
Voice calls are completely fine and noise/crackle free.
My call is currently with their 'senior engineering' team. Can't wait to move house and ditch them for Sky unlimited.

i cant get sky where i live, but, my problems began on monday, and tuesday, now yesterday and today they have been fine, phone fine internet fine with old modem thingy in racking out 54mp thingys. i thought it was the old router just being connected right to my computer, but maybe they have been having problems at their end and not told us!
im happy with the deal i got with aol and tbh over the last 11 yrs theyve bee fine,
the number i put on here is the correct number but wont let me in

Well if your BB is seemingly stable with the 'old' router, then my suggestion would now be to try the new router which AOHell sent you.
The reason I am suggesting this (as has already been mentioned) is to take advantage of the better wireless encryption security that the newer router has over the 12 year old one that you have.
The old router (if 12 years old) is an 802.11 b wireless max theoretical wifi speed 11mbps (real world 4-6 mbps) with WEP encryption (weak, can be hacked in 2 minutes). PS that router must have cost you a bomb 12 years ago. I bought my first router 9 years ago and for a basic Netgear wireless router it cost me about £200.
New Router at least 802.11 g wireless max theoretical wifi speed 54mbps (real world 15-20 mbps) with at least WPA encryption (good not hackable yet).
From what you (and others are saying) it seems likely that it was AOHell's LLU equipment that was having issues but perhaps they have now solved the problem.
Good Luck0 -
sorry forbeing thick, im currently using speedtouch thompson something which appears stable, when i look into it properties or something (dont know how i did it) it says 54mbps.
i shall wait for the new router and see what happens. thanksTHE CHAINS OF HABIT ARE TOO WEAK TO BE FELT UNTIL THEY ARE TOO STRONG TO BE BROKEN... :A0 -
not saying too much just yet but i think I (as in not aohell) have fixed it by fiddling with numbers on the setup as per previous posts,.. will keep you informed..THE CHAINS OF HABIT ARE TOO WEAK TO BE FELT UNTIL THEY ARE TOO STRONG TO BE BROKEN... :A0

I suspect that if you haven't changed the wifi channel on your new router, its on the default and probably on the same channel as half the rest of the street. Download and install InSSIDer on your laptop and run it. It'll say what networks are on what channels. Change yours to a clear one.0
