    Thank you everyone. :lovethoug:blushing:

I was feeling really down yesterday (lots of things have got on top of me this last few weeks)
I spoke to my boyfriend and told him how I feel, that I think it will be years before we can get married.
He went really quiet. We had a talk about it and he said don't worry, we will get there.
He thought I was trying to tell him I didn't want to marry him.

Any ideas or suggestion would be a great help :j

Turns out he has a mate who used to work as a chef/caterer and who still does the odd function, so he will sort something out for a set price.

I would do the evening buffet the day before if could, with help from my sister, but I don't have the space to store the food.

I will do the cake myself (bought from Asda or Tesco) as I am quite handy at decorating them.

My outfit? I could start buying bits and pieces from now.

Flowers - I could get some supermarket flowers the day before and make a bouquet with extra ribbon.

I am mostly worried about the meal afterwards (why is it called a "wedding breakfast"?) and drinks for everyone. And the evening buffet.

That is where most of the money will be spent.

We worked out we will have 30 for the day and about 50 extra in the evening.

I live in Bury, Lancashire and need somewhere cheap to have the meal and evening do. I don't mind 2 separate places.

I'm not too bothered about a professional photographer either, to be honest. Maybe just get someone to take a few formal shots outside the register office. I could ask people to Facebook me any photos they take on the day and get some printed out later.

Thank you everyone. It means so much to me to have people out there who care and offer encouragement.

Photographer- make this the biggest budget. It's the only memories you will have.
Meal- what about a local chip restaurant? They may offer a discount or you could request that the guests put in a fiver each and you'll divvy up the rest.

If you go with the current trend of vintage style, you could have an awesome fun day. Beside the sea side kind of effect.

On love my dress someone got married at St Pancreas station!
At the end of the day it's all about you two. Always happy to help if you need anything as we all are. x

eta. We had our 'evening do' at our house. It was an awesome day and we spent £1,500 on everything. Suits, food, flowers etc

I don't know if this will help but this was mine and DH's wedding.

    We printed the invitations ourselves.

We only invited family plus a couple of friends to the register office and got a couple of the friends plus my mum to take the photos. We then had an afternoon reception at our flat for the people who had attended the actual wedding. We did the usual cutting of the cake, etc (cake was paid for by my mum as a surprise - if she hadn't done that I would have simply not had a cake).

My dress was on sale for, I think, £130, and I also had a veil. DH's clothes all came, IIRC, from TopShop.

Our rings came from Argos - cheap as chips and about as strong. We have since replaced DH's with a few tungsten rings (and I do mean a few - at some point recently shopping telly channels were selling really nice men's rings for less than £15.00 - P&P included!). My ring is still OK because I have tiny fingers so it's hard for a ring to bend.

After the afternoon reception we sort of kicked people out, and then set ourselves up for the evening. We made the evening reception a BYOB party - it was made very clear on the invitation that we didn't want any wedding presents, but we'd really appreciate the BYOB taken seriously - and it was !!!

We bought a lot of frozen catering food from supermarkets a few weeks before and cooked a lot of it the day before the wedding. I slept at my mum's the night before the wedding and DH stayed at home. The morning of the wedding he had to get himself ready and throw a few things in the oven.

Typing it out like this makes it seem stressful, but it really wasn't. I had no flowers to worry about, no cake to worry about (although my mum bought us one as a surprise which was lovely and completely stressfree for me). The food was easy because if you can stick an oven on at 200 then you can cook frozen party food - and it probably costs less than a tenth of what you would pay a caterer and is exactly the same, unless you want to show off.

On the invitations we said "We want your presence, not your presents", plus the BYOB bit.

We were married nearly 17 years ago and occasionally my DH will bump into someone who came to the wedding but we have since lost touch with and they almost invariably mention the wedding because they enjoyed it.

I think the total cost was somewhere in the region of £1000, maybe less.

Whilst typing this I just kept smiling because I have such good memories of the day.

Edited to add: We got married 11 weeks after we got engaged.

  • Hiya, http://www.bury.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/LifeEvents/Marriage/CeremonyVenues.htm theres a list to all of the venues in Bury that have a licence for civil ceremonies if you are after an all in one place. If you're hoping for a church wedding and just need somewhere for the meal and evening do then check restaurants and pubs with function rooms, local sports clubs, village halls etc or any golf clubs.

    Hope that helps!
