OMG just read form sent by gp there is barely any detail on it....clearly a rush job and many facts omitted - no wonder it was refused
change your gp, get them to write a letter outlining your problems, phone up the dla and ask them to reconsider their decision based on new evidence, failing that, appeal.

DLA is a slow process and can be a couple of months from you filling the form in to the DWP giving you a decision, which is probably going to be no from the DWP as that is their standard policy, and then you appeal and get a proper assesment by independant adjudicators.

A slow process well tht's debatable. First time was about three weeks this time,I sent my application off Dec 20th and heard on January 14th a Yes. I haven't had any trouble getting through their process much better than Incapacity in my opinion.

It usually tells you on the letter they send you to contact them if you've not heard by a certain date. Did you have confirmation that they'd received your application, if so it should say on there.

All the more reason for you to appeal. I know it's awful but the Benefit is there for people just like you, you're entitled to it. From what you've said you need it. Is there a Consultant or other Practitioner/Therapsit that you've been seeing, who could help with supporting evidence?

If you can gather together as much as possible and let them know you want to appeal the decision and you want all documentation in regard to your claim. It's not a pleasant ordeal but you've really nothing to lose. I have had one not for DLA but the Tribunal were really kind and open with me and very sympathetic, in fact I was only in there for about 30 seconds because of doing a thorough job on evidence before hand etc.

If you can get to or contact CAB they aren't able to represent you but can give invaluable advice. Go to this site and sign up for the email tips, they make you feel more empowered.

I know it sounds a bit silly but it's up to the genuine people to do what they can to get what they're entitled to and lead the way. I wish you all the best and good luck.

Things always get heated on here when people are discussing how to fill in DLA forms! When I completed my sons, I was told to describe the RANGE of problems and how it affected him, with an indication of how freuently each happened.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

Thanks for this, it's good to see more positive experiences rather than just everything's terrible, it'll take forever, then you'll fail then you'll have to go through appeal...
I don't know about other applications but in my case the hold up was due to my consultants taking a long time to fill out the forms rather than any fault on behalf of the Decision Makers/DLA process. I received letters to apologise and tell me that they were processing my application but waiting to hear back from doctors.

Hi All, I think I'm going to ring them and say I'm not happy with the GP's imput on the form - it really was minimal and omitted various info like I've had nerve problems in my legs since September last year. Regarding my depression, yes, I see someone for CBT but shes not a doctor so cannot give a diagnosis she just gives me the therapy. I'm under a consultant and physio for prolapse (which isnt severe but it exacerbates my nerve problems). The consultant for the prolapse wrote to my GP suggesting I see a neurologist about the nerve pain but the Gp said it was not necessary at this stage and prescribed me amytriptaline as well as 40mg fluoextine. I've suffered from depression more or less constantly since 1999 and never claimed any benefits for it. The form the GP sent says it starts in pregnancy and continues. Well I've had four kids in 14 years so I suppose he has a point but I've been depressed plenty of times without being pregnant. I expect that had something to do with the decline as well. I feel a bit let down by the system to be honest.

That's entirely normal! Or so I am reliably informed.
It may be that the GP hasn't got the faintest of a clue on how your disabilities are affecting your life.

If that is the case, this is something that I have been harping on about for quite a while now. It seems that you are supposed to tell your GP about your toilet needs, feeding, self care and of course what your mobility is like - all in the 8 minutes that they give you to also discuss why you went in the first place!!

That seems a very reasonable way of doing it. Certainly better than trying to convince the DWP that your worst day is like that every day!
  • I applied for DLA back in September last year and I'm still waiting for decision so, yes, it can take months and months.

With regard to GPs - I called my GP when I made my application to let them know that they might receive a request for a report and requested an appointment. (I rarely visit my GP - meds are on repeat and my main care is from my team of consultants). I was told that 'an appointment wasn't appropriate' and 'if they had a question they would call'. (My GP has changed several times over the last few years - usually there are several locums on the panel so you see a different doctor each time. I'm just happy if they speak half decent English).

I'm expecting to be turned down and to have to appeal.

fill in the form the way the form tells you to fill it in.....
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
    [/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that
