Really? Will I have to tell them that it's my mum, if I DONT tell them can I get into trouble cause I know who it is? I was wondering why I could get an overdraft (I only have ever had my orange contract, which is up to date, but got turned down with my own bank for a £100 OD. :(

Without knowing all your personal circumstance's it's very hard to know why you couldn't get an Overdraft, but if you personally think that you pay your bills on time, get paid regularly etc, then there is a good chance that your problems stem from else where, YOUR MUM.

Your loyalty to mum is admirable, but where is her loyalty in return

The reasons why she's done this are fairly moot to be honest. If it was "legit" why not discuss it first and, more importantly, pay the sodding bill so it's not even an issue. I agree that you're not going to call the rozzas in on your mum, that's a given (certainly not for £200), and her offer to pay up is a good sign, but I really do think CIFAS and getting your credit reports is a must for you now; if not for your protection hers. What's to stop her doing this again with a CC for a couple of grand?

But...does that effect my credit file badly? Like if she doesnt pay it ASAP? I'm not 100% sure how this all works but I'm so angry with her. I don't want to dump my mum in trouble with the police you know? I dont think I could do that :(

Can she call them and change the name on it? Maybe say she made a mistake when filling out the form or something ? :((

I'm sure she can change the name of the person responsible for the account without making up more stories. It's a feasible situation - that you no longer live at the address but the service is still required. Any existing liability (the £200) will still be against your name though.

It will appear on your credit files, as will other borrowing that she might have taking out in your name. These could well affect your ability to get loans, mortgage, mobile phone contracts...

I'm so worried to look at my credit file in case there's other stuff I dont know about

Better to find out now than to leave stuff on there that you continue not to know about.

  • Looking at a bigger picture, has she signed up for a 12month contact? In which case this could go on and on if not dealt with now.

If I were you, I'd pay off the bill (if you can?) so it's out the way, check your credit report and tell your mum if she ever does it again then you will report her for fraud (and demand the money you had to pay).

I don't know your relationship personally obviously, but I'd be very hesitant to report my mum for fraud against me - and a phone bill does seem a bit trivial.

I wouldn't imagine it would have a major impact on your credit report, and it will disappear in a few years time anyway. Not ideal but I personally wouldn't risk whatever trouble my mum might get in so I could get a blemish off my report. (No idea what sort of trouble it would be, on the one hand it's fraud so very serious, on the other it's against a family member so I guess you saying you don't want to take it any further, and the fact it's just a phone bill, may get her off the hook?).

    Yeah Experian is good

Cancel a day or two after you get it though, the account will remain open for the rest of the 30 day trial

Also, make sure whatever you do you don't use that LowerMyBills thing. I tried it out of curiosity and they gave my email/mobile number out to sh*t loads of loan companies who call/text me several times a day

You need to check at least experian and equifax (some would say callcredit as well).
If you only check experian you won't get a full picture as there are financial institutions that don't report to them.
