The last released figures, $1.5M per DAY loss, and this was in Q3 2009 - believe me, ad-rev from videos doesn't come close.
Nobody wants to advertise on some crappy kids camcorder effort, yet they have to facilitate terrabytes of that stuff speedily and securely in order to be the destination for high-worth content, the one or two viral hits a week. We are not talking about a couple of lousy old laptops in a basement, but CDN-quality hosting on a global load-balanced backbone, and it is not cheap. If Google slows down, people go elsewhere.
As for ad-rev shares, they were laughable. How much do you think Pete Waterman, owner of Rick Astley's 'Never gonna give you up' made from ad-rev shares from all the 'rickrolling'? Millions? Thousands? A couple of hundred at least? Eleven stinking quid.
Google know YT is a lemon, it means they are dominating a market so nobody else can, and their adwords etc side are profitable enough to facilitate this, but at a cost.0 -
Doesnt surprise me for what google bought it for, but they are close, before it was sold to youtube it made cash and was ad free, i do not like the way it is now. i see i will have to post a link for you:

Im sorry but your wrong. they have never made a profit.they sold up a year after they went live and in that year they didnt make a thing that could be classed as profit. As it has grown it has continually lost money. they were close last year but will have to do something else to try and turn one this year."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0
