broken wash. machine - repair or replace?

Hi, I bought a washing machine (Haier) in April 2009. Last time I used it I thought the whole house will fall down when it was doing the spin. The next day I tried another programme to give it another go but the same thing happened. Had to switch it off unfinished. It's definitely broken. I thought the warranty these days is two years but the shop says it is only one year. They advised I can get an independent engineer to look at it. If his report then quotes 'manufacturing fault' I can send it together with a covering letter to the shop's head office.
I am not sure if it is worth it and whether I should just get a new machine instead? Many thanks.

A good start, and a free one
, would be to google for the make and model of your machine to see if lots of other people have the same problem. This should give you some idea of whether or not it's an inherent fault or a normal/routine/ish breakdown.
Try things like:
make model review
make model complaint
make model fault

Just a thought, but probably wrong!
As my washing machine is quite old, this may not apply to modern machines. At the bottom front is a small flap behind which is a screw in tray, which collects water, fluff, shirt buttons etc and should be emptied periodically. If this gets full, the machine makes more noise on the spin cycle and moves. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Hi ive had the same problem except mine only 12 months old. The retailer has responsibility for six years under the consumer goods act to attempt to put damage right however if the damage is found to be your fault ie a pen stuck in washer ect then you will have to pay which is why it is better to get a quote from local tradesman rather than manufacturer as this should be cheaper, otherwise they should pay. However it may work out cheaper to get new machine just depends how big a job!! hope this helps : )0

I've seen this site which seems to have a lot of good content reviewing washing machines if you need any guidance on a new one.

I had a bad experience with Bosch a few years back - the same model broke 3 times in the space of a week and I had to keep returning it (a freak occurrance I'm sure) In the end I got my money back and went for a Hotpoint washer which has been marvelous. The whole world is a circus - don't be the clown!0
