Question for those with longer hair?

I've been growing my hair for nearly 2 years and have managed to get it to just below collarbone :D(long for me). I have cared for it and obsessed over it, given little trims along the way. However, whenever I brush my hair I still get quite a few broken pieces on my top, maybe 1/4" or less perhaps around 10 pieces.

Is this normal for people who have longer hair, to expect a certain amount of breakage? Or do you think I need to splash out and have a good cut :(? It looks healthy other than the breakage - no split ends.

TIA

If its normal for you, then thats fine, if you see what I mean. I have hair down to my shoulder blades and however you condition it, etc, you can still get these baby hairs growing and sticking up :) I think it is new hair growing, rather than breakage. well i hope it is!
I dont like seeing them stick up on my head either, but i always use auzzie smoothing serum to add extra shine to my black hair, and this serum keeps the baby hairs down
The opposite of what you know...is also true

I have waist length hair and have had for many years. I don't see a lot of breakage to be honest. I would recommend massive amounts of supermarket brand conditioner at each wash and no 'little trims' at all. I was 18 when I grew mine, I had to be strong to get past the 'need a cut' moments

Do you have a fringe or layers or anything? intrigued...mines is long and want to keep it going but I don't feel the need for a cut just, that I look boring....so last time I got lo-lights - that was a steep thing for me a girl who gets her hair cut twice a year to get rid of dead ends! lol

Are you talking about the little sticky outy hairs from around the crown area, so that you end up with about a dozen tiny "feelers" sticking straight out of your head?

If so, yes, it's normal for me. My hair goes past my waist.
For the little "feeler" hairs, I just put a bit of gel or mouse on the individual ones, as there aren't that many of them sticking out at any one time.
  • I think it is breakage esp if you use straightners alot..Ive got longish hair which I have highlighted and am always straightening so ive started using the Tigi Urban Antidotes shampoo and conditioner! Its fab and helps against heat styling etc and makes your hair feel lovely.Theres 1-3 3 being for the most damaged hair that gets the most styling etc..Ive started using 2 and its lovely and you can feel your hair getting stronger:D

    .
Definitely breakage not baby hairs there are little bits over my white t shirt :o They are less than 1/4" some are only a few mm's in length

I cut down on all heat styling whilst it grew. Since it got to a certain length I have started occassionally straightening and blow drying. Just to stop me looking like a cavewoman . I will look into those Tigi products.

What I was wondering was are my expectations of having long hair with no breakage unrealistic. Are a few broken hairs on my tshirt inevitable as long as its not effecting the look of my hair? iyswim

I have a fringe which I cut myself, but no layers. Once every year or so my DH cuts the ends so that it is straight. It's quite curly, so I haven't experience the 'sticky out hairs' others are talking about

I've a natural curl but never really 'coax' it out if you get what I mean. Although let it dry natural alot and it does what it wants..

    Thanks

I get breakage too, mines about the same length as yours and curly, the things that have helped me are no heat and most importantly minimum brushing also washing less has really helped, dry shampoo is my friend;)
Thank you for this site Martin

    Good luck for the future

I cut my waistlength hair 18mths ago - did it myself so it was no ones fault but my own. I did/do find I lose a lot of hair but I think its more that my hair is thick than breakage. I'd say be gentle with your hair. Hair stretches and the longer it is the more chance of stretching it to breaking point if you are not gentle. If its tatty then start brushing the ends before moving to the lengths. I also use frizz ease serum on the ends (just the ends or it gets lank). I'm not a fan of regular trims - just had mine done for first time since cutting it 18mths ago and wish I hadnt bothered!
