Problem with Vodafone contract - cooling off period

I upgraded my contract in January. I was on £30pm and agreed though their retentions department to keep my old phone and pay around £10pm instead for a further 12 months plus the 3 months that was left on the end of my contract to start immediately.
I discovered a short while after that I had been transferred to PAYG instead (on a night out when trying to order a taxi, so not a good time to run out of credit, even better considering I wasn't expecting to have any credit to run out of) and received a bill shortly after, of which one of the items was a £100 charge for cancelling my contract early. That money has already gone from my bank account.
When I got in contact with Vodafone they said that the contract was cancelled as I didn't get back in contact with them within the 7 days cooling off period. Now this wasn't mentioned to me during any correspondence with Vodafone and it seems completely backwards. Surely if I wasn't happy with the contract I'd get back in touch with them? And even more fundamentally, surely if they're assuming I didn't want the new contract as I'd not phoned them again they would have re-instated the old contract automatically?
Does anyone have any suggestions to what I can do to try and reclaim that £100, or if I have any leverage in this situation?
I should probably add that after being transferred to PAYG I've since switched networks and don't have an account with Vodafone any more to my knowledge.

What was your understanding of what you were getting for £10 a month ???
ie. what plan did you think you were on ???
The only chance you have assuming it was done over the phone is ask for a transcript of what was agreed at the time the deal was done.
I take it you don't have any paperwork they sent you detailing the changes ???It's not just about the money0 -
