I do not think it is true, we have two bus companies here, one does the get on / get off ticket. The other just issues a "permit to ride", guess they got fed up with the "ticket to ride" gags, especially if on IOW

And on what are you basing your information on?

Have you ever worked in the industry?

This may have been asked before:

If a bus is travelling from A to B and there is enough space on it such that any fare paying passenger can get on between A and B, what is the marginal cost to the bus operator of carrying someone with a bus pass?

Its not worked out like that, in fact its completely the opposite.

The bus will run anyway, regardless of who does or does not get on it. It is a registered bus run with a set cost attached to it, and that cost is more than likely at least half funded by the council.
The rural bus runs are 100% funded by the council, due to hardly anyone using them but still being an essential part of village life.

The bus companies make their money from single and return fares. Weekly and monthly passes are seen as a loss, as are the concession and disability cards. The money from these sources pay for the "bread and butter" - the profit comes from singles and returns.

I base it on the example I gave, did you read & not comprehend it?

Yes but the weekly and monthly tickets give the companies money in advance :) They can then invest that guaranteed money if the so wish.

After the 9am start time for use of the passes, the twirlies come out in droves, and add considerable time to the journey, valuable fag time lost at the terminus.

And I've even heard about a service which is regularly full of those using bus passes, making it impossible for fare paying passengers wanting to board en route to do so.

Pretty sure it was a story on BBC Radio 4. But no idea now which programme, and it was a while ago. A scenic route, if I remember rightly, so very popular for a day trip with the twirlies, but also an essential transport link for many others.

I vaguely remember something like this and I only remember it because it's a place I used to know. It was the coast road from Scarborough, a very scenic route (think 'Heartbeat' country).

When the free passes first came in a man in our area (south-east Essex) got the free bus to Stansted airport and a cheap flight to Dublin. He wrote to the local paper describing how he'd enjoyed Guinness on the banks of the Liffey then home the same day, all for very little cost.
