Advent Verona Laptop Problems

Hi, 1st time I've ever used a forum so not sure if this is the right place.
My 11 year old daughter has an Advent Verona Laptop and it has a white line running down screen. This has been happening on and off for months but the 1year warranty ended on 23/12/10. As the line doesnt disappear now she just decided to tell me. Really annoyed as no longer under warranty and found out her friend had the same problem and got a new laptop but I contacted pcworld and they are offering a repair or £230 towards a new one but I would prefer not to pay any more towards a new one as the problem occurred within the 12 month warranty. Is there any way of identifying that the white line has been there for months and if this is a common problem with this make. Any advise would be appreciated. thanks

Google Advent Verona Laptop white line

Says yes a problem with some .

Warranty is outside the 12 months no way to claim its been there for ages .
Suggest you contact Trading Standards who may be of more help regarding repair outside of warranty .

Personally and subject to finances i would take the £230 towards a new one .As thats what they are selling for as refurbs .

A quick check on Google tells me replacement screens can be bought for around £70/75. Anybody reasonably competent with a set of small screw drivers and a bit of patience could probably replace it in an hour or so for you. The laptop will need to be stripped down so that the screen can be removed as a whole and then the plastic bezel around the screen should just pry apart to reveal the screws that hold the screen in place. It's not difficult as long as you take your time and take some digital pictures at each stage of disassembly in case you forget what goes where. This Youtube video gives a clue as to how the initial disassembly is done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y6QffzBvUY

I've seen the white screen fault on one of these , looks like a single line right down the middle. It also looked like it had seriously run hot as several of the keys seemed to be warped and melted

Adveny is a dire house brand from a dire retailer. Your mistake was not buying Advent, it was shopping at DSG.
When you said that they have offered a repair, on what terms?
You'll do better with a repair at an independent laptop specialist, most 'repairs' at PCW result in a factory restore, regardless of the fault.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I gather the repair is to sort out the white line on screen but they did say if i took the repair option and anything else went wrong after it, I wouldnt be covered for another repair so prob best to take the £230 towards a new one.

But if the repair is free?

Then I'd take that, but ask them to give a 12m guarantee on the replacement screen.
A decent replacement is going to be £350 plus so you'll be £120 down on the deal otherwise.
Just back up before you hand it over for repair though!

  • thank you for your help, will have a think about the repair but my daughter is keen to get a new one and put her birthday money to it to get a better make. The keys are also really slow when typing, there seems to be a delay when typing fast.
