O2 new packages/home phones-have i got this right?

OK,we currently have O2 BB standard package costing £7.66 a month.

That was a 12 month contract we signed up to just over 12 months ago so we are officially out of contract.

I seem to recall having an email detailing price increases and i think my £7.66 is due to go up to £9.50 at the end of March ?

Meanwhile we have BT line rental /eve-weekend package and the contract expires in the next couple of weeks so we have officially given notice of termination and will be migrated onto their standard line rental agreement which we can leave at any time.

I like O2 and I'd like to stay with them.

So as far as i can gather my options having read the following are..

1) Keep on Std BB package at £9.50 pm (no shaping),keep BT for LL rental and calls.

2)Keep O2 Std package at £9.50 pm with no shaping and take up their home phone for £5.11 per month which i presume includes line rental and seems to include calls to UK destinations and 20 international destinations

3)Sign up to a new 12 month contract eg the basics for £15.83 per month including home phone but no call allowances and with 20Gb limit ( not strictly policed/limited),with shaping.

I'm not a big internet user. I just do normal surfing, emails etc and i would like to watch a youtube vid without it stopping to buffer every few seconds.

The added complication is that if i take the home phone on the std package,i then have it for 12 months.

It seems to me that option 2 is the best deal for me??

Any comments??

Ta

2)
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    1) Keep on Std BB package at £9.50 pm (no shaping),keep BT for LL rental and calls.

If you phone up O2 you will be offered two deals to continue with your legacy package and sign up for another 12 months.

    1. £2.50 off per month
    2. 6 months free and 6 months at £9.50 - they might not offer this deal right away but plenty have got it.
2)Keep O2 Std package at £9.50 pm with no shaping and take up their home phone for £5.11 per month which i presume includes line rental and seems to include calls to UK destinations and 20 international destinations

As far as I know if you take out O2 home phone you are moved onto the new contracts for BB.

Youtube and BBC iPlayer would all be badly affected with the new traffic shaping.

I realise ive misunderstood my option (2) and that the £5.11 is in fact an additional charge for the included calls and not the line rental !

    Yes it is.

However main issue would be the fact that taking O2 home phone means you need to accept a new contract for BB and cannot stay on the legacy packages as far as I'm aware.

We changed from BT last year and have a complete package with O2 - home phone, line rental, calls, voicemail, caller display, along with broadband. At the time we were offered reduced broadband costs of around £5 to £6 for up to 20 GB limit. The inclusive monthly charge has been £24.02.

Before adding the landline we experienced no problems surfing and recommended O2 highly. However, following downgrading to package to 20 GB, our broadband speeds and downloads reduced dramatically. YouTube vids, iplayer etc stuttered and stalled.

We spoke to O2 technical department on several occasions and asked whether 'traffic shaping' or 'throttling' was being applied. They denied it strongly, and had us re-setting the router, checking filters, doing this, that and the other ........ one of the calls lasted over an hour!
    With no improvements.

However, following completing an O2 survey last week, listing my complaints, a technical manager phoned and admitted that the basic package does involve traffic shaping. If O2's tech. staff had told us when we complained, we would have asked to go back to the previous package we had been on.

To cut a (very long!) story short, the tech. manager immediately upgraded our package to the 'All Rounder', and is refunding money for the past several months, they're also sending a new router.

We are now back to whizzing along on the net, much happier with speeds etc.

I wouldn't advise anyone to take the basic package, for a few extra £s you get a better net experience.
  • If you are on an O2 broadband legacy package, and move home, will you be required to change to one of the new packages?
