Basil1234, the first link you provide is irrelevant to the question - the question is about cable broadband, the link is about Virgins ADSL service :)

Never had any problems with it, I pay for 30mb down and get 30mb down.

ive been on most off the speeds virgin cable do's and the only time ive had bad speeds is when ive been on the middle speeds, when they need to upgrade the network,
    eg 10mbs fine,20mbs bad ,50 mbs ok ,2mbs ok 4mbs bad and 10mbs good,
i think in my area the speed that every one is on suffers and you can tell prety quick if its going to be bad ,the last time i went from 10mbs to 20mbs ,i down graded back with in a month to 10mbs ,
thier customer service with faults is bad most off the time even to the point ive been told its my pc ,even through it was not conected to the modem a different one was ,and they did not support vista at the time ,
thier billing is confusing at the best off the time ,they seem to charge you full price and add a discount to get the price down and you never pay the same as a new customer after the first year,
if you do not ring them up every 12 month to get a deal they leave you at the same price or put it up ,
if you do get a fault thier answer is to reboot every thing (modem ) or say its your pc ,virus ,malware ect put not them
apart from that its better than ADSL when it works which is more often not,
i think ive had two years with out any faults now
TV messes up about midnight for ten minutes or so if your changing chanel ,but its fine after that .
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

Yup,that's been my experience as well.Basically the are not enough tap ports in the cabinet so they fit a splitter to get two connections from one, which halves the speed in effect. It's more noticable the further away you are from the cabinet.
The was around this it to fit a reverse line powered HDU in the ETB (gray box) & the HDU Isolator where the modem/tv point is in place of the standard isolator (the white box on the wall the tv/modem connects to)

    SPIKE!!!!

I'm dissapointed, adding a splitter doesnt "half the speed" it reduces your upstream and downstream by around 5db. Not always an issue

I was using simple generalization mate.Seeing the state of some of the installs in the studentville here,I'm suprised they work at all!:p

Ik currently on 02's highest internet package, and it started out ok but im nearing the end of my contract and have been looking for the best one to get. It doesnt neccesarily have to be the cheapest but it must be reliable and after reading virgin fibre optic seems to fit the bill.
I work from home and all my calls come through my laptop via a headset so speeds need to be good or the line quality is terrible. I also have at least two other laptops on in the home at any given time. 02 is justgetting worse and i cant rely on it, just done a speedtest and it says downlad 2.52mbps and upload 0.96. Would I get better than that with Virgin? Im scared of jumping ship incase its worse, as it means no internet, and no income!

With VM, you will get what they claim (until they run out of space in the cab), however you need to sign up for either their 50Mbit or 100Mbit service if you don't want any download/upload restrictions in force.

Even if you were with virgins lowest package and you got traffic managed you'd still be faster than o2!
