is this tyre legal or not?

There is something I remember from my tyre-fitting days about parts of the tread which are supplementary not having to have visible tread if they're designed to wear to nothing a part of the tread design? If the TWIs are below the main grooves, IMO, it's legal.0

But these two central bands aren't required to have tread, I have had plenty of tyres where there is no tread in the central band.
The central main grooves are there and above 1.6 so that's ok and the side band tread is ther so that's ok.
yes, I agree, if you can measure 1.6 or more across the entire 3/4 of the center then it's legal. I thought the op was saying the centre was worn below that and relying on there being 1.6 or more on the outer tread.0 -
If in doubt .. just change it.
I wouldn't want to drive on it.0 -
this post shouldnt be here youve posted as youve already have a suspicion it doesnt look right, so theres doubt in your mind as to its fitness, so follow your mind and put at rest by going to a tyre fitter and change it.0

Its legal
It is coming to the end of its life though but IMO doesnt need changing at the mo, prob another few thousand miles left
If the centre of the tyre is wearing faster than the outside it may be that they are over inflated0 -

I think it's legal but ready to change.

As has been said already the tread looks fairly consistent looking at the side of the photo, but if in any doubt, just get it replaced ASAP. You're not going to get more than a couple of thousand miles out of it anyway at 2-3mm.
What's the other one like (on the same axle)? Have you noticed any lack of grip when driving around? IMHO the most dangerous aspect here is whether this tyre has much less grip than the other one on the same axle. That can lead to unpredictable handling in the wet, which is never a good idea.
Just one other thing -- I'm probably teaching my granny how to suck eggs here but when you do replace the tyre, make sure it's the same brand and model of tyre as the other one on the same axle. If in any doubt replace both at the same time.
Do you have a spare? What is it like? This tyre you've shown us should really be used as a spare if your current spare is better, until you get around to changing it.0
