As long as you enter the digits starting from the right hand side (as you obviously would, being a numeral) then it's exactly the same.
My way the meter reading is (blank)52973.
    Your way it's 052973.
Whether you fill the 0 in or not makes no difference as long as the other digits are aligned correctly. It is assumed that the first blank is a zero.

    hello,

Thanks for your advice with this.

The 4389 number says its an estimated reading, and there are seperate numbers for kWh's and stuff.

It does say cubic meters on the bill.
You need to give us "old reading" and "new reading" and try to dig out old bills to find the last actual read. From now on take daily or at least weekly reads because it looks like you may need them !!

It may be that the supplier has it down as a 5 digit meter so entering 052973 will only show up as 05297, I can only enter 5 on my on line entry so would enter 52973. In this scenario the far left digit would be irrelevant whatever it read.

It is vital that the first digit is put in whether it is a zero or not, failure to do so would give the wrong message at the other end, in this case it is a six dial meter and the computer is expecting 6 digits so anything different will be rejected as computers do not know that you have dropped the first digit rather than putting a zero as in the display.

A bit of a broad assumption saying the computer is expecting 6 digits given the current incompetence of the utility supply and metering industry.

Somewhere on your bill there should be a meter number. Make sure this matches the numbers under the bar-code on your meter. You may need to have your meter checked as there is a huge difference between your readings and the estimated one on your gas bill.

Thanks for the insult, its bad enough that I get swore at, spat at and dogs set on me for just trying to do my job and read peoples meter, you then have a go at me when I try to give someone advice on here.

I have not insulted you personally but the industry in general.

I had my meter replaced. The person replacing the meter wrote the wrong final read down, luckily I had taken it myself at the time (trust no one).

We have several instances on here of incorrect meter numbers on bills even though reads have been taken by meter readers, isn't part of the job checking the serial ?

Meters have been replaced and the supplier is unaware, surely there are checks in place to ensure that everything is recorded correctly. I worked with aircraft and it was critical that component serials were recorded accurately, a suprisingly simple task if someone can be bothered.

Institutional incompetence coupled with consumer apathy is a recipe for disaster. The industry needs a good kick up the !!!! !!

Are you 100% sure your meter is identical to this? This is a 6 dial meter and is normally only found in businesses however you can get them in larger homes.

Could you take a photo of your meter and post it on here? (if you do blamk out your srial number first).

Your meter may have 5 black numbers followed by 3 red numbers. Your reading would then be 06140 which would mean you have used 1751 m3, which is approx 19300kWh. This is high but you don't say when your last bill was produced plus the last reading was estimated.
