I am so confused.
I am trying to sort out paying an gas bill so I have taken a reading, that consists of 8 numbers, but when I look at my bill it only gives me a 4 figure number.
any idea which 4 figures i should be looking at?
it currently reads
06140669
but my bill says 4389.

I was trying to put the figures in to a bill calculator and it gave me a bill for £3k! lol
I have it down to £617, by taking out the 0 at the front and taking off the last 3 numbers. Does this sound about right? This bill would be about what I was expecting.Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0 -
From http://www.which.co.uk/switch/energy-advice/understanding-your-energy-bill
Although gas meters measure the amount of gas used in cubic feet or cubic meters, gas bills display your use in kilowatt hours (kWh). The industry standard formula for converting cubic measurements to kWh is as follows:
Start by subtracting your current gas meter reading from your previous gas meter reading to work out the number of cubic meters or feet you have used.
Multiply this figure by 2.83 (this step is not necessary if your meter measures in cubic meters)
Multiply by 1.02264
Multiply by the Calorific Value (you can find this on your bill or by asking your gas supplier)
Divide by 3.6 to work out your KWh figure
Multiply the KWh figure by your pence per KWh rate (you can find this on your gas bill or
by calling your gas supplier) to give the cost of gas used.
Paying energy bills by direct debit
It's disgusting they are allowed to make it so confusing. Hope it helps.0 -
4389 will probably be the no of kWh's you are being billed for. That is not the number on your meter, which measures in cu. m (if a metric meter) or 100 cu. ft (if an old imperial meter). The no. of gas units used is not what shows on the meter, it's the difference between the opening and closing readings on your bill.
Once you have checked what sort of meter you have, use the above calculation to check the kWh billing is correct. Or (quicker) use this:

hello,
Thanks for your advice with this.
The 4389 number says its an estimated reading, and there are seperate numbers for kWh's and stuff.
It does say cubic meters on the bill.Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0 -

Does the meter serial number of the bill match the bill?IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

You have shown a metric meter, and the reading is 52973.
Ignore numbers with the red surround, they are fraction of a cu m.
So the original reading you quoted would be 61406.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

The meter shown in the picture is an M16R5 meter which has 6 dials so the first zero (as in all meters) should be taken so the reading on that meter is 052973.
These meters are normally in industrial units or shops but not unknown for them to be in houses.0
