Need new gearbox

Toyota UK HQ called me and said they cant offer any financial offer to fix my car unless i get the car fixed at a Toyota dealer centre, and even if they did offer any money it would not be anything significant. They suggested to keep my costs down i use an independant. However, they did admit its unusual for them to hear such type of fault with my car.
My independant garage has tried to source a 2nd hand gear box with luck. They said they will take it to a specialist gear repairer who charges about £600. mechanic said they can repair it without replacing the parts - eh? Anyone know how they can repair something without repairing damaged /broken parts?
Not that uncommon. Toyota just won't admit to it.

I fail to see the point you are making here.0 -
That bearings are a common fault on Toyota Corolla boxes at about 80K.
You appear to have got the car mixed up with renault in your post though.0 -
No, that was my point.
*Loads* of manufacturers have faults with gearboxes. You're picking out Toyota for similar reasons you did in a previous post. I've done the same, to make the point.0 -

This post is about a Toyota, so I've no idea why you're making a point on a Renault.
Corolla's have a common fault on gearbox bearings, at about 80K, as the op has found out, or are you saying they don't have a fault, as I have really no idea what you're on about with renault gearboxes.0 -

i have been getting some slight whirring/humming noise when in 4th/5th gear especially noticeable at speeds above 40mph+.
Took it back to the garage who repaired gearbox, they said it was the casing on 4/5th gear which needs to be replaced but is not related to the bearing failure from original fault, and will cost £300 to fix! The garage said gears can be re-aligned when bearings are changing, hence the humming. - Anyone know if this is true?
But chap said its not essential if i dont fix it. The noise is liveable but i am not full convinced, as he should have told me this was the case beforehand.
any suggestions what i can do?0
