Can't hurt. Depends on what actually has failed with the box of course -- if it can be traced back to lubricant you're stuffed basically (as this should have been regularly checked/replaced), but if it's a manufacturing defect Toyota may well help you out.

I will write them an email tomorrow and see what happens. But i guess they may want to inspect car themselves or at a Toyota dealer, but guess its worth a try.

I would be a bit gutted to have any gearbox fail at 77k, especially if it has stopped working completely.

Are you sure the car hasn't been clocked before youowned it, or are you shure of the history?

There are plenty of places that import the parts you need direct from Japan. Just make sure you fit a new clutch. A decent one, not some cheapy.

    Hi
car was purhcased from Toyota dealer. Car was 1 yr old when i bought. Agree appears a bit early for a major failure like this at 77k. Going to send an email to Toyota and copy to the dealer, see what happens.

Since Corolla was built in Derby I'd expect there to be parts available in the UK.

Toyota UK HQ called me and said they cant offer any financial offer to fix my car unless i get the car fixed at a Toyota dealer centre, and even if they did offer any money it would not be anything significant. They suggested to keep my costs down i use an independant. However, they did admit its unusual for them to hear such type of fault with my car.

My independant garage has tried to source a 2nd hand gear box with luck. They said they will take it to a specialist gear repairer who charges about £600. mechanic said they can repair it without replacing the parts - eh? Anyone know how they can repair something without repairing damaged /broken parts?

Have a chat with your local guy again. I suspect he said if he whips the gearbox out and sends it to his repairer, he can fix the original box instead of replacing it.
Put the gearbox details on one of the many second hand parts searches and get a better feel for availabilty/cost. Thereafter, you are just factoring in the cost of someone to do a clutch replacement for you to get the total cost.

I would recommend getting your original gearbox reconditioned, rather than getting a replacement used one. Most refurbers will give you a guarantee where as a used one obtained from the breakers or the likes most likely wont. Also, you may find a used one go wrong sooner than you'd think, as the synchros inside will have worn. A recon will have new ones installed so will last longer if properly rebuilt by a specialist transmission company or reputable garage.

my mechanic after a full week of waiting said he will take it to a gear specialist, which will cost approx £375+VAT plus a £150 tow charge (need to check), need to check if it includes p&l.

That's a pretty competitive price for a refurb and it includes labour e.t.c.

    Hope it goes well.

Right after almost 3 weeks!!! Got my car back. Cost was £700 inc vat from the gear specialist. They said they reglazed my gearbox (whatever that means) and changed some bearings to new ones. They did say they had to rectify a few noises after first repair..hmmm. Hoping i dont get charged my the garage who referred me to this gearbox people. Toyota were no help, unless i use their own garage, even then could not guarantee any contribution. They did however, it was very unusual for a car of my type and age to suffer such major mechanical defect.
