Locked car and have lost our only key!

Yeserday my DH locked our car but has now lost the only key that we have!
I know it is a silly thing to do and we should have had another key cut( which we will do if we find the key).
We do not have cover for this on our insurance.
I have contact RAC and they would try to open the door and start the car up so I could drive to a garage to get a new key made. However, we have been told that this will cost anything from 200+ VAT to 900.00 - the car is not worth that!
Has anyone else been in this position and what did you do? Is there anyway of getting it done cheaper than going to a dealership? Thanks

    Smash the window

If not call a indie garage. They usually have the tools needed

It's a simple plastic wedge to prise the door, and a metal rod to pop the door

I had one when working for the AA a few years back

Where are the neighbourhood car vandals when you need them most huh?

Probably the only situation, where the insurance premium rise would be cheaper than getting it fixed :(

Getting into the car is one thing, but starting the engine is something quite different... If you've been quoted £200 to £900, surely you're talking about a key with an immobiliser transponder. Immobilisers have been mandatory since the 1990s so there's a good chance the car has one. That's rather more complex than just cutting a new key, and in many cases can only be done by a dealer.

Having said that, it's still worth talking to an auto locksmith as it may be possible for them to do this more cheaply, especially if it's a relatively old car without the newer, more secure immobilisers.

Not if you call out a mobile car key fitter

They'll cut you a key and program it for around £100-150

Does that apply to newer vehicles too? A couple of years ago I was trying to get a key copied for a 2002 Xsara Picasso. I called a few places who initially said they'd do it, then tested the key and told me I'd have to go to a Citroen dealer.

  • Hold your Dozy Hubby upside down and shake him , the key may well fall out from where it is hiding.

Get your OH to find the missing key.

Have to traced his steps at least 3 times?
    Looked in the fridge
Down the back of the sofa
    In the rubbish
    In his clothes
    In the washing basket
    In the washing machine
Asked the kids if they have hidden it
    Has the dog eaten it
    Caught up in shopping bags
    In his work tool box
    In the garage
    On the path
    In the grass front lawn

    and so on.........
