We paid for a survey on a house and the guy was really pompous and was acting like he was doing us a big favour even visiting us.

When I got his report he had said we were a 3 bed house and we're 4. He was shown all 4 bedrooms. I rang up and asked for his report to be corrected and they said "it doesn't really matter as it won't affect his valuation."

I said "OK, I'll send you a cheque and will mistakenly leave a zero off, that won't really matter will it?";)

Because the op wasn't buying a holiday or TV. He was requesting professional advice on the largest purchase of his life. He needs a direct contractual relationship with that person so that he can sue them if something goes wrong.
so holidays and TVs fall into one cathegory but surveys into another. interesting. what if someone books a holiday which is more expensive than the average house?:D?
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.
  • By way of an update. Natwest made an offer (with no admission of guilt) which I declined. Metropolis sided with Natwest saying that my contract was with Metropolis. I've sent them both the contract I signed for the survey, which is with Natwest and does not distinguish compulsory from voluntary surveys e.g. the compulsory valuation and optional survey are down as one combined figure. I've also sent them the description of the surveys available from Natwest's website which clearly states that the full survey inlcludes looking at roofs and would require ladders, whereas Metropolis state in their terms that they will only inspect what is viewable from the ground floor. So there's a clear mismatch. The FSA spent weeks messing up the paperwork on this and eventually came back saying that the matter regarded a survey not a financial service. therefore they couldn't adjudicate. I had to point out to them that the terms of the mortgage were that I had top have a survey in order to secure the loan, and the FSA have now had to U-turn on this and admit I may be correct on this point.

Ironically I found a letter from natwest from 1987 welcoming me to their bank (in the days when bank managers had some control). They're going to throw away 25 years of my business, a pretty reasonable salary flowing through my account, and substantial savings sat in a Natwest account, and my private banking fee for the sake of an £ 800 survey. No wonder banking's in trouble.

I wait to hear from the FSA and Metropolis. Natwest have washed their hands of it.
