When mine does that I know that I left a coin or screw in my trousers before washing them and they have gone to wherever they go in the machine.
Mine is a bosch and I remove the bottom panel and pull out a tube and drain the small amount of water in there... There I find the screw, nail etc.

Something is trapped in it or a drive belt is on it's way out. I'd check for small bits stuck in the edges for a start.A house isn't a home without a cat.

We had something similar happen and one of the wires from my missus' bras had escaped through the perforations and was sitting between the drum and the casing.
Have a good look around the inside of the drum with a torch and see if you can see anything poking out of any of the drain holes.
Try turning the drum by hand to see if you can work out where the noise is coming from.
We had to get a repair man in to fix it who removed the offending wire for £40 - there was an access panel at the bottom of the machine.
Thanks

If its not any of the above its likely to be the bearings.
Sometimes thats not as bad as it sounds, they can be easy or difficult to replace depending on the model of the machine.
Lets hope its a screw loose !0
