Exactly. I can't think of anything more likely to put a internet newbie of a senior age off, than waiting for a typical feature-rich web page to load on a dial up connection. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I agree with Macman: my first home Internet access was BT dialup in January 2006. I used it for more than 2 years. It was not too bad at first, then got slower and slower and became almost useless. More and more websites added features that took a long time to load.
I cancelled my BT Landline and got prepaid Three Mobile Broadband. I have never looked back. I do remember that I loaded the disk that BT sent and got online in a few seconds!Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

It might be easier to use Emergency Internet. All you need to do is set the modem to dial their access number and you are connected.
No need to set up an account beforehand.0 -
Yup, I agree.... you'll end up frustrating the people into not bothering with the internet if using dial up, I can't think of anything much worse than trying to show people what the internet is capable of via dial up.
What with Windows updates and antivirus updates continously downloading their updates all the time you're online will make it unbearable.
Newbies are amazed at Google earth, google streetview, iplayer, spotify and most feature rich websites and all these can't be yours with dialup!

20 hours of dial up per month would pay for a broadband connection
Yep ! I have tried every which way, that I can think of, to encourage broadband...... I don't want to push any harder as it could well be my 'fault' if things don't turn out. This is a start, at least, and no harm done, or great expense, if it goes pear shaped.

Thanks for all the suggestions
I love the idea of Emergency Internet

Freedom to surf do a 3 month contract at £14.29 per month

That's good advise.....Plusnet also offer 'no contract' ADSL which might be useful but you do have to pay a connection fee of £25 plus £20 for basic wired router/£40 wireless router....and depending on location you could get their £6.95 a month deal which is excellent for your typical internet newbie!
