Hi just got a computer from freecycle for MIL and we want to connect it to Bt 'pay as you go' internet so that they can 'have a go'. I have connected the computer to the phone line and can hear the modem dialing. There seems to be some connection there (2 flashing green computers botttom rt tool bar) but cant get onto the web. We are taken to Bt Yahoo intelligent Landing Page and have no idea what to do next,
When I started out with bt dial up I seem to remember installing a disc which had the correct settings on- naturally I no longer have the disc. i was wondering if it was possible for me to download something to memory stick to install on their computer or, if any one had an idea of what to do next.

Does the PC have a built-in modem or are you using an external one? U/N and p/w correct? Phone number correct?
This link is very old but might help:

The good news is that your modem is working and connecting to a BT computer but its not letting you log on to the network.
The only things I can suggest are...
Check username and password (if you haven't logged in for a while your PAYG account is disabled and you have to register again).
What phone number are you using? The one I use is 0845 7560000.
Do you have your number withheld automatically? If so prefix the dial up number with 14700 -

Thanks I saw this too when I googled the problem. I really could do with help from an expert. Maybe I will phone Bt to see if they can talk me through it.
Thanks

You'll get more 'expert' help on here than by phoning BT I suspect...I doubt that most BT call centre clones have even heard of dial up internet access...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Did you manage to sort this out?
getting the BT/Yahoo "ilp" page suggests you are using the right number but your logon username or password are incorrect.
Just one thing, the account needs to be registered with BT to make it operational.
Is it a new account or fairly old?
Accounts need to be logged into every 90(?) days or so to keep it active.
Depending on that you will need to use one of these numbers
0844 090 2270 for newer customers, otherwise 0845 756 0000
The number stated by someone above is either invalid or a typo.
To check your settings, open Internet Explorer, Click on "Tools", "Internet Options", "Connections"
Then highlight the BT Dialup Account, then Click on "Settings"
The username required will be the full email address,
and i guess you already know the password. . .
If still problems create a new dialup account from the "Connections" Tab, from above, by clicking on "Add"
Click on " Dial-up to private network"
When adding the number, no area code needed, just the number, such as 08457560000
When the number, username and password have been added, Click "OK"
The newly created account will become the "Default"
To change the default, click on one of the accounts listed under the "Connections" Tab then Click on "Set Default"
My account falls into the older category and i have logged on today, using that 08457560000 number.0 -
I used to use tesco daytime dial up. £6 per month for daytime use. From memory I asked instore for a disk to install it.

Just looked again and Tesco will send you a free disk0 -

Thank you. I think the top link may be exactly what I was looking for . I have saved it to a memory stick and will try it out this weekend.

20 hours of dial up per month would pay for a broadband connection!!
