I subscribed to this 'Premium service' sometime ago. I'd been using Motley Fool for many years, so was interested to see what something like this might offer. Some of their 'tips' have been quite interesting and I've invested in a few. There were some obvious 'dogs' which I was wary about and didn't invest in. I notice since it's inception (some 18 months ago?) it's under performed the FTSE All share Index by some 11%! So much for Maynard Paton and David Kuo are finding the best investment opportunities for your portfolio. Perhaps they should rename themselves the Motley Jokers?

I don't really follow the comings and goings of the Motley Fool website, but isn't it somewhat hypocritical of them to claim that managed portfolios can't beat their respective markets while offering what is effectively the advisory equivalent of a managed fund via this share tip subscription service? Or to put it another way, claiming that professional fund managers can't outperform the market while selling a service that people should try to use to outperform the market?I am a Chartered Financial Planner

Perhaps thet should have stuck with their cheap index tracking hypothesis, or at least their high yield portfolio, not sure how well that has done.0

It's simple enough, people who give share tips whether newspapers, tipsheets, tip websites, and in most cases stockbrokers, wouldn't be doing that job if they were good enough to get rich by investing. If they can't make themselves rich from investing, they can't make you rich.
I assume they maintain that the reason the majority of managed retail funds underperform trackers is due to their very high costs. I've never had the impression that they disapprove of direct investment or all collective investments, including one of their writers giving some giving very iffy encouragment to buy the Fidelity China SS fund, a share in which he had an interest.0 -

Proves their point though'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

By that I assume it returned 16.2% less than the FTSE A/S over the same period?0 -
Motely Fool's credit took a bit hit when their "foolish four" theory was discredited, so not really surprised by this:p0

I've been a member of Fool since 1998 and they have some great articles and forum boards. I was disappointed to see them branch out into selling tips as it seemed to go against everything that they had done in the past. I guess they needed to find other ways to make money from the site.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
