I've been trying to get my ds interested in building blocks at all. He's 3.5 and not really into building stuff. Today for example he played with his woodden blocks - but they were cars being parked at a carpark - he can play that for hours .

On his request we did open up a lego caravan and he likes playing with it - as a car. Wasn't interested in building it and of course bits kept falling off, so he's not ready for Lego.

I even got a duplo train track to maybe get him building around that, but no.

Playmobil on the other hand he picked up really quickly and loves pouring his collection out onto the floor.

You can get various things to go with megabloks too if you just want to build on the collection, my DD (2) has a jet car/sailboat thing and some animals and her friend in the village has a set with eyes and ears and stuff to build monsters but I would have to agree with Becles, not all kids like blocks. My DD LOVES blocks, bricks, anything that stacks and can be organised has 3 fave soft toys but other than that can't be bothered with them, her cousin (5 & a girl) loved Bob the builder and is now into Ben 10 amongst other things but her other cousin (3 and also a girl) is a total dolly girl, loves dolls, and cuddly toys and prams, the works.
  • My son is four and a half, and still loves Duplo. Lego is way too fiddly.

If she's not bothered about Duplo, then try Magnex (magnetic building bits that both my kids love) or Octons (octagon shaped bits that fix together). My son also has a building set from ELC which is like a younger child's version of Meccano. You can build robots and stuff with it - has nuts and bolts, spanners etc. He loves that too.

We had megabloks for DS, but he rarely used them even though they were easily accessible. We then got him some Duplo for 4th birthday/christmas. .(Fire station, toy story train, etc) He uses them as sets for his games eg using fire engine to put out fires. He simply isn't interested enough in building to alter them significantly.
