    Are you Christian? You may have strong religious feelings about working on a sunday, in which case they are not allowed to discriminate against you because of your religion

    Out of interest, how is it discriminatory if 12 members of presumably varying faith of staff are being asked to work the Sunday?
    The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

    If you work in a shop you can legally opt out of Sunday working.

    If not, it all comes down to them considering your reasons for not working it. Whilst your family commitments may be important to you, they are not likely to carry a huge amount of weight for your employer, especially if they're about a preference rather than a requirement (e.g. you just like spending time with your family on a Sunday).

    If you did take the angle of refusing to work on religious grounds, they are obliged to consider that reasonably, but it doesn't sound like their request is discriminatory in itself + they may still feel their business requirements are strong enough to override any religious commitments.

    All you can do is try and come up with sensible and practical counter-suggestions for them, and hope they listen. Otherwise yes they can terminate your contract + re-offer you on the new terms and then you have a decision to make.
