RIK, the latest versions of combofix won't run on an avg machine even if it's disabled, unless they've only just ironed out the bugs to allow it to :(

no probs matey, I only found out when I was getting a rootkit off an avg pc recently

Combofix comes up with a dialogue box stating that it can't run as avg targets some of the CF files, even when apparently disabled
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

  • by Firefox is back I mean that it will open it and i don't get the
Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.
    message.

It seems okay, i will see how it runs for the next few hours, it had been re-directing websites.

Thanks for all your help everybody, I will install Avast now, is there anything else I should do?

Give it a clean up too -

    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

  • Thanks again, its really good of you guys (this includes girls if you are) to share your skills and help us out.
I'll bake you a cake - i'll probably have to eat it myself, but the thought is there ;)
  • !!!!!! - ran Avast and it wanted to restart, re-started and now have a windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause etc etc.

I'll have to try and find the installation disc - quick question, do you know how to run a disc on a notebook HPmini that has no cd/dvd drive?

Is there some way i can use the cd drive on a laptop to run the disc to the hp mini?

    Argh!
