With most plugs being platinum tipped these days, you can easily go 4 years or up to 60k on the same set of plugs. You could save yourself a few quid each year by not bothering to do those. Air filter too, unless you live in a particularly dirty area, but that should last 60k or 3/4years without getting blocked. If anything, i'd do the fuel filter mroe foten than both of those, as the fuel used by supermarkets is tending to block them up now and you need to change them more frequently.

As a follow uo to my OP we chose to go to the main dealer as the price quoted was only £15 more than our two locals indys. It included a loan car, with petrol, for the day and our car was washed and cleaned inside - an unexpected bonus.

One indy was open and said they hadn't worked on our model much and would have the check it out online!!!!!!! The other was nice enough but was full of really old bangers which put us off. But next time I will still reconsider but that will be a year away as we have a very low mileage.

Again thanks all for the really helpful answers.

Thanks to all for previous comments as just deciding what to do about service for a 5 year old Renault Clio. Rang 2 dealership garages for prices and both want to charge about £199 for a service and one even said that we should think about the cam belt being replaced. This bumped price up to over £600 so will forget that one. Going to ring round other local garages for price and work comparison next week as well.

on a 5 year old clio thinking of a belt change and associated rotating bits might be more prudent than you think
someone on this site called a punto a hand grenade ready to go splat yesterday but at least a belt going splat on an 8 valve punto will only cause inconveniance while on a clio it will bring very large tears and a very empty bank balance

my father used to swear by getting work done by the main dealer all the time every time. Now he realises how much of a waste of money it was and how useless it is (it doesnt really add much onto the final resale price and is just paying for the dealership stamp in the logbook - which can be done if you have contacts anyway lol)
