moving house - difference in water bills

We are in the process of moving house, from a 3 bed with a water meter, to a 3 bed without. The only major difference is that the house we are moving to has a bigger garden (but hey we are in a hosepipe ban area anyway). Our current water bill - from the meter is about £180 per year (Thames water). We have just received the water bill from the house that we are moving to and they are rated at £280 per year (southwest water).

Is there any way to challenge the rate, or get a meter put in or is there that much of a price difference between water companies?

You can get a water meter put in and try it out for a year, the charge based on rateable value is basically setup to encourage you to take a meter.

There is considerable differences between water companies, and if unmetered, even within different areas of a water company's 'patch'.
Not only can you change to a meter, but most companies insist new occupants are to have a meter.
