Guys
Got my nice new ipod (cheap off ebay of course:) ), but can't get it to synchronise with my itunes.
Basically when I plug it into my USB (1.1 i think) the message
"Hi Speed USB device plugged into a non hi speed usb hub" "There are no hi speed usb host controllers stored on this computer"
comes up and no matter how long I leave the pod connected the songs won't transfer across
Any ipod/laptop experts have any advice?

Apparently some newer Ipods will not work with USB1.1, maybe you need to get a USB2 and/or firewire card for your pc. I don't think these are too expensive, try ebuyer or somewhere like that.
If your IPod has a large capacity (say 40g or whatever) you'll be glad of an upgrade to USB2 or Firewire believe me!Toffeeblock0 -
This should help it details what the requirements are:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60971
would seem 1.1 should work, it certainly did with my 4th Gen, but haven't tried with my 5thEver stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
Thanks guys - its a 4gb nano. Don't know what generation.0

I tried buying an adaptor that converts my USB from 1.1 to 2 (or thats what the sales guy told me it would do) which didn't work.
I then went to the apple store and the apple genius told me that the problem was my ipod wasnt compatible with usb 1.1 and that the 2.0 USB adaptor would still be acting as a USB 1.0, hence wouldn't work.
He wasn't sure about my dell laptop, but seemed to think that it wasn't possible to upgrade to USB 2.0 and the firewall suggestion isn't an option as I don't have a firewall port.
Does anyone else have any ideas before I through my laptop and ipod outta my 26th floor apartment!
Thanks guys.

I update my Ipod (5G) via a 1.1 usb on this old laptop I'm using right now. So 1.1 really should work fine.0

Hi SRA,
The guy in the apple store said that some people are able to synchronise on 1.1 for some reason and others aren't. Strictly they aren't compatible he says!
Funny cus the very first time i connected the ipod it did actually synchronise ok, but since then nothing seems to happen. The pod shows the "do not disconnect" message, but won't let any songs sync unto it no matter how long it is left. Very frustrating.0 -
I see online that it says the requirement is USB 2, yet in the Ipod features Guide pdf (don't know where I got that) it just says
"A USB 2.0 port is recommended to connect iPod. USB 1.1 is significantly slower than USB 2.0. If you have a Windows PC that doesn’t have a USB 2.0 port, in some cases you can purchase and install a USB 2.0 card. For more information, go to www.apple.com/ipod."
Are you committed to using Itunes? You could try using one of the other devices that can sync with an Ipod like Mediamonkey - Just to see if it will work0 -

Try restting the ipod, by holding down the middle button, and the upwards part of the clickwheel.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Pythagorous you wouldn't be able to upgrade your USB ports on your laptop, but you should be able to add a couple of USB2 ports using a PCMCIA card. Your laptop manuals/docs should tell you how many of these ports you have and what kind they are. They are quite long, deep but thin slots on the side of your laptop with a button next to them (in case you don't know what i'm talking about), usually you'll have 2 of them. Once you know you can google or go on ebay and do a search for PCMCIA USB 2 card, there should be plenty pretty cheap now, hope this helps!:j Ready to take control of my life! :j
