o2 signal problem - can I get out of my contract?

I have a pay monthly contract with o2 which still has 9 months to run. I have just moved to a house which has a very poor signal, and I cannot use the phone in the house, and barely get a signal in the garden. o2 have said that I am obliged to continue in the contract as I could get a signal in the house where I lived when I began the contract (it was a 24 month contract).

They have reduced my monthly fee from £30 to £20, but this gives me reduced minutes and no internet.

Am I stuck with this? Advice would be appreciated please?

    Pretty much. You've agreed to pay o2 for 24 months, you've changed your circumstances through no fault of o2 so they're not obliged to let you out of the contract with no penalty.

    Mobile phones are mobile, you can use them in different locations, while you can't use your phone at home you can still use it elsewhere. No network will guarantee 100% coverage 100% of the time or coverage indoors.

    o2 have not changed anything here, you've changed something so if o2 were to let you out of your contract early it would just be a goodwill gesture, I'm afraid that would be the best you could hope for and you're unlikely go get that as they'd be writing off at least £180 which at the moment they're guaranteed to see at least some of whereas if you left o2 you'd be unlikely to go back unless you moved again.

  • Many thanks to Grumbler and Wintermute for taking the trouble to reply.
    I rather thought that I was stuck (I chose to move after all...) but thank goodness I am headed towards the end of my contract and not near the beginning of it.

    I read through the T Mobile posting - there was a suggestion that signal should be checked while viewing properties. I actually did think to do this, and my phone showed at least 4 bars in all the rooms. What I didn't do was try to make a call. When I do, it says emergency calls only.

    Lesson learned. Thanks again.
