Car tax without insurance

Can anyone clarify rules before I make a wasted journey?
I currently have valid insurance, it runs out on the 22nd.
I was planning to tax today and then re-insuring when i'm likely to start using vehicle again (mid April)
Tried online but it suggests, as the tax will be valid from 1/4/11 and my current policy doesn't cover that period, I'm unable to purchase.
Is this just a quirk of the online system? Will I be able to purchase from Post Office?
I had maybe wrongly assumed the validity of the insurance was check against the purchase date, not the valid from date.

Insurance (and MOT) must be valid on the date the tax starts from.0 -

So you are trying to save one months insurance, but you will not save anything on car tax and your car will have no insurnace cover whatsoever for a month. That sounds like a risk I wouldn't take unless the car only cost £100-200.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

If you can find a PO out in the sticks that isn't linked in electronically, you might get away with taxing from 1st March with the old paper forms. Havent been able to do that round my way for the past two years though.0

Hi,
Probably wouldn't for my main car but this is actually for a motorbike.
It's an old un so not worth a great deal and it's parked safe, no risk of theft.
Likely i'll get rid of it this year so might just get 3 months PAYG insurance depending on cost.
My renewal was offered at £145 TPFT for year so 1 month saving is negligible. I was simply thinking it would be easier to get the tax done (£38) whilst insurance was in place but reading the posts above it seems I can't.
Fair point though. thanks.0 -
If you aren't going to use the car and it's off the road you could declare it SORN for the period of your non-use?0

If the vehicle is uninsured it _must_ be SORNed.

I didn't think there were any of those left. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
