Looking for cheaper dog food suggestions

Just to add - we went to PAH yesterday to check out dog food before we get our puppy.
One offer they do at the moment is, if you take your dog in to be weighed then they will weigh your dog, advise how much they should be eating and then give you a free bag of their own food to try. She didn't say how big the bag is, but might be worth bearing in mind.
We are getting a shih tzu and thinking the PAH food seems like the best choice or Arden Grange

I switched to Orijen because it's organic and a bit cheaper than some other options. It is great! If you order it online it's great because you don't have to lug it around and it arrives at your door. I've found that zooplus.co.uk offers some great promotions on their organic dog food and luckily if you spend £19 you get free P&P.0

FWIW, I feed mine RAW. I have three dogs, and it costs me about £40 a month to feed them (they are medium/large breeds)
dont know if the Op has considered that as an option?0 -
My family has fed "Wuffitmix" dry compelte dog food to all the dogs we've owned since the 80's and they thrive on it. You can get it online now too and it's a lot cheaper than most brands but just as good.0

Just checked this out. Looks like an OK food (not great), but biggest bags you can get are 12kg (the silver flake is 15kg, but the ingredients are pants). And it's about £25-£30 depending on what one you get.
IMO that's a lot of cash for the ingredients. Arden grange can be had for the same money and you get 15kg too.
Not a bad food (although I'm not a fan of foods with animal derivatives as the only meat content), and if you're dogs do well, that's the point. Just IMO expensive for what it is.Sigless0 -
Sorry, don't mistake, if Dr Johns is good for your dogs, then great. But the ingredients speak for themselves.
The first, and therefore main ingredient is cereals, doesn't say which, so it'll obviously be the cheapest they can find at the time of making. And the only meat content is meat and animal derivatives, and as you pointed out, god alone knows what that is. So you're basically buying a bag of unknown cereal flavoured by god knows what bits of 'meat'. Not something I'd want to spend my hard earned cash on.
Protein is dependant on the source. If it's from a good source, IE meat, then the dog will be fine. Orijen is widely considered the best dog kibble available (I have spoke to several nutritionalists who also think this) and the protein in that is 40% plus. If it's from cereals etc then it will be a concern as the dogs digestive system will convert that to sugar and become hyper. Dogs on a raw diet are known to be calmer and the protein levels will be much higher with that. But the protein is from a source the dog can use and digest properly.
Same goes for supadog really
Wheat is a known allergen to dogs, and not something you want to be the main ingredient in your dogs food. Better meat content that Dr. Johns. But then more wheat, and added salt? Why?
Like I said, all just my opinion based on two years worth of research I've had to do to find out what's upsetting my dogs tum. Speaking to various nutritionists etc.Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.0 -
Have to say I wouldn't go past Skinners Duck & Rice.
Mr B is wheat intolerant and have tried various things (James Wellbeloved, Burns, Judge's Choice etc).
He was on Wainwrights (PAH) for a while and that suited him but it went up to over £33 / bag and their free delivery changed (used to get it over £29 and went up to £49 - may have come back down since, I don't know).
Popped into my local pet shop (owner is very knowledgeable) and he recommended Skinners Duck & Rice - £23 / 15kg bag (bag does around 6-7 weeks for a Lab).
I can honestly say Mr B loves it and his coat is lovely & glossy.
I know it would be lovely to say that money isn't a consideration but for many of us it is. By feeding this, I can ensure Mr B's getting a good quality food without having to worry about it.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
